Flavin of the Month
Anyone who believes that L.A. is culturally bereft obviously missed LACMA’s Dan Flavin opening on Wednesday night. A people watcher’s dream, eclectic guests—decked out in everything from Prada to Vivienne Tam—strolled through the galleries, shrouded in shifting colored light. A festive crowd sipped cocktails and noshed on vegetable empanadas in the courtyard. Curated by new buzzed-about LACMA Director Michael Govan, the comprehensive exhibition showcases a range of work—from the 1960’s on—by Flavin, who is often discussed in the company of Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt and Carl Andre. Now, the show is officially open to the public, so feel free to soak up some of that rich L.A. culture. Meanwhile, take a gander at history in the making. The new LACMA building is in a state of mid-construction, but the scope is still quite impressive. $9, LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., (323) 857-6000, lacma.org
