Dior vs. Chanel

Never mind Hillary and Barack, the battle between the new school and the old guard was raging just as passionately at Paris Fashion Week. John Galliano's operatic "Madame X"-inspired collection for the House of Dior inspired much lust and some loathing, not least in the comments section of the venerable Cathy Horyn's New York Times blog, where you'll find some of the longest, most empassioned comments in the fashion blogosphere.
"Galliano’s Dior couture shows are manifestos for costume designers and drag queens." hissed one reader, while another asserted that "Mr. Galliano is the greatest living couturier of our time...what an incredible celebration of artistic workmanship."

At the other end of the spectrum was Karl Lagerfeld's softly-hued, shell-inspired collection for the House of Chanel. It also garnered much praise, although it left me fearing for the young socialites who will no doubt hoover up these designs. If Chanel's boxy-jackets and ballet flats managed to make even lithe catwalk models appear flat-footed and frumpy, can you imagine what the effect will be on less fortunately-figured Manhattanite heiresses?
