Living jewels, ordinary world

Insects, creepy crawlies and anthills aren't annoyances, they're inspiration, at least according to jewelry designer Jennifer Herwitt, whose diamond-encrusted necklaces and rings emulate the delicate forms of spiders, scorpions, and even lowly ants.
Entomology-obsessed Herwitt isn't the only one who thinks there's beauty to be found in a hornet's nest—Jessica Alba, Dita Von Teese, Pink, Anne Heche and Marg Helgenbergeris are all fans of her art-meets-nature science designs.
Herwitt is one of several creatives taking part in "Ordinary World, Finely Wrought", an exhibit of "conscious design" being held at the Thatcher House in Venice, CA, this weekend to benefit UNICEF Water & Sanitation Programs.
Actress Lucy Liu together with Warner Bros exec Courtenay Valenti are co-hosting the opening night party tonight.
As well as progressive art, photography and furniture, the Thatcher House itself  is being sold off as part of the benefit. It features eco-touches like radiant floor heating, solar photovoltaic panels for electricity and solar water heating panels. The event opens up to the public on Saturday January 26, from 10a.m. to 5p.m. Call 213 784 2003 for more details.
