Win My Chanel Gift Bag
The Santa Monica airport was never as chic as this past Friday night, when Karl Lagerfeld jetted in — literally — with models to present his Cruise presentation. A few choice runway looks will be featured on the Stylephile. In the meantime, here’s a quick recap of famous faces in the front row: The Olsen twins sat and evaluated each look with funereal stoicism. (Anna Wintour and WASPS nationwide would be proud of their refusal to show any emotion — not even a twitch or smirk.) The ever feline Victoria Beckham, too, watched each outfit like a cheetah eyes a limping gazelle, as if thinking, "You are weak. I am Posh. I will have you." Lindsay Lohan looked vaguely annoyed — or maybe it was accessory envy — as the models pranced by wearing all variations on the hippie headband. (She was spotted smiling after the show, wearing a Chanel head scarf. Maybe she mugged a model backstage?) But most importantly, I have a gift bag from the show containing a darling bottle of Chanel No. 5 (3.4 oz; $90) and a Chanel parking pass (blue logo; priceless) to give away to one reader of the Stylephile. Here’s the question: what’s your secret to staying fresh on a long flight? A certain moisturizer? A bottle of Moet? Be specific about your regimen and you could be head-to-toe in eau de Chanel. -- Monica Corcoran

I pack a washcloth, to keep my face hydrated. I just soak it in warm water and place it on my face. It's really refreshing especially when one's tired. A shawl helps to ward off chilly cabin air. A pair of comfy flats will make traveling through security just a breeze.Posted by sunchicka | Jun 7 2007 9:07PM
I keep fresh on a flight by using Mary Kay's Private Spa fragrance in "Dreams" and by using MK's facial fresheners. Both of these are designed to go in the fridge to keep you cool and fresh. I also listen to my ipod and read a great paperback, usually by Anne Rice, she is one of my favorite authors. I also like to scrunch and unscrunch my toes, keeps the blood flowing and circulating. I love to fly, thanks for letting me share!Posted by Queenbee1001 | Jun 6 2007 9:33AM
There are so many credit card offers that it is always hard to choose. I would say that there are no bad or good credit cards, there are just credit cards that are bad or good for you. In order to understand which card is which you should consider your spending habits, your credit history and compare credit card offers from different banks and issuing companies. I love to fly, but I am admittedly vain, and a tad fussy. Because I fly from LA to Paris fairly frequently, I have my flying routine down cold, and I am happy to share it with anyone interested. Here it is: -Shower right before leaving for the airport--ice cold at the end, so I feel clean AND refreshed. -NO make-up--I'm not a huge fan anyway, but it's just wrong for flying. Tinted lip balm is the only exception to this rule. -1 very large Gucci tote--necessary for my 17" laptop. -1 clear plastic bag containing: Sample products I keep around just for this purpose--when else will I use my Creme de la Mer eye cream sample? Once on board, trying new products is a fantastic time-killer. Molton Brown samples are especially great--big enough, but totally fine going through security. mini toothpaste needs to be in this bag too, as does the lipbalm I mentioned earlier. -mints -cash-ideally dollars and euros--for magazines and water, which I am now forced to purchase at the airport, and a taxi once I've arrived at my destination. -extra t-shirt and underwear -warm slipper socks -Big comfy headphones -Pashmina to keep warm -This is embarassing, but.... Juicy sweatsuit to change into once on board. -international mobile phone/pda -lots and lots of Haribo gummy candy--and maybe goldfish, if I'm in the mood -smaller handbag for items I need immediate access to, like my passport and my wallet. -Gigantic sunglasses -Filofax -Emergecy kit- medicine, band aids, etc. (No liquid of course), discretely tucked in side pocket of the smaller bag. -neck pillow, which I will inevitably forget and then need to purchase at the airport, where I will get a mediocre replacement for twice the price. -A cheery attitude--always necessary for flying, without exception.Posted by LSW | May 28 2007 1:39PM
The secret to staying fresh is to wear support socks no matter how young you are. They keep your feet from swelling and keep your blood circulating all the way up to your fresh face. And of course Chanel moisturizer and water (everybody knows that! :-)Posted by paigeboy | May 24 2007 12:47PM
Johnson & Johnson lavender body lotion - lulls me to sleep before we even take off. I always carry my toothbrush and my trial size toothpaste since using them's a must when I wake up at landing time.Posted by aprshwrz1 | May 24 2007 3:47AM
Some of us do not have the luxury of flying like an Heiress....so my easy and affordable secret to staying fresh on a long flight, is first footwear. You can find Knock Off Crocs and other fabu flip flops at stores like Target or even K-Mart. They are easy on and off for security and lounging on the plane. I also carry Bag Balm, which I think is a godsend. It is like really thick Vaseline. I apply it to my lips and very sparingly under my eyes and man does it hydrate!! The night before I freeze lemon slices that I have cut very thin. That way, I can add them to bottled water for a little zing and it keeps the water colder longer. Last but not least is babywipes. They are perfect for hand cleaning, underarm cleaning, or ANYWHERE cleaning (if you know what I mean). These are easy and affordable ways to staying fresh on flights that last one hour or several.Posted by PalmtreeDiva | May 23 2007 6:38AM
i was just on a flight out to chicago that was delayed so the four hour trip turned into six. armed with a large bottle of water (because they never give you enough on the plane and you'd have to buy it from one of the airport stores since 3oz. of water will not last you very long), comfy slip on shoes, a light fleece blanket, a couple of magazines, and Boots No. 7 4 in 1 quick thinking wipes that cleanses, tones, moisturises and removes makeup (because sprays may not dry very fast and sometimes leaves your face sticky) i was ready to hit the town once my flight arrived.Posted by lecoco | May 23 2007 2:20AM
I pay off the person next to me to sit somewhere else, as they usually make me feel stuffy, and they smell weird. If they don't take the money, I offer them to be spritzed with some of my body spritz and moisterized with my lorac lotion. Usually, the thing that makes a plain trip feel un-fresh, is the person sitting next to you....so I either move them, or make them smell better. oh yeah, I offer them some of my organic chewing gum, it dissolves in your mouth, so there is no need to throw it away.,,,,,,Posted by thecutiepie | May 23 2007 12:35AM
First - it's great to be skinny if you're traveling coach! And if at all possible I carry only a decent sized handbag and forget about hauling around carry-on. There's nothing like just stepping off the plane with my purse. I bring my own emergency water to drink, an eye mask so I can snooze, industrial strength ear plugs or an iPod and ear muffs to beat the constant drone of the plane (which wears me out), a travel sized packet of those large luscious Huggies to bury my face in and wash anything pitty, and the travel sized Evian Brumisateur to keep the face from pruning out. And my vial of Airborne, vitamins, my battery operated toothbrush, Vivid White toothpaste and all the fixins for my morning face. And when I get into the plane lavatory I just splash around, rehydrate and moisturize to my hearts content. Love it!Posted by Cool Loon | May 22 2007 8:44PM
Whenever I fly (or visit the humid east coast), I always remember to bring my Caudalie Beauty Elixir. It's the perfect remedy to overcome the woes of a long flight - I simply spritz my face and neck and I'm instantly more relaxed, refreshed and radiant.Posted by Tristen | May 22 2007 4:15PM
My biggest tip is- never, ever, get on without an alternate outfit. Find something light and easy to change into and take it in onboard luggage. Why? I once flew from Melbourne to LA with an entire glass of orange juice in my jeans:) Also as a Mum who travels... make sure to bring lots of things to occupy child, who might want to watch Curious George 7x from LA to Australia (mine did) BUT might not... Also bring your hand sanitizer and your toothbrush... Just before you deplane at your destination, change clothes and brush teeth. Those meeting you at the other end WILL appreciate it.Posted by Cat G. | May 22 2007 3:56PM
Comfortable clothing, melt-proof makeup and lots of cold water. I usually travel in loose jeans or a light, mid-calf length skirt, black t-shirt in summer or cashmere sweater in winter, no bra, Dansko clogs I can slip on and off, and I always have a top layer with big pockets that will hold my phone and ipod (or very soon, my iPhone!) a change purse, a mirrored lipstick holder and lipstick, a compact and a tiny bottle of hand sanitizer. I have a jacket with me no matter the weather because air-conditioning can be too much for me at times. I sip cold water continuously. I don't wear much fragrance on a plane because many people, myself included, have allergies. If I need a little lift I wear Chanel No. 5 deodorant, which sounds strange but it's a really light, unobtrusive way to wear fragrance. I keep chewable Vitamin C with me so I don't get sick. The makeup is the thing. I wear I.D. Bare Escentuals foundation because it stays fresh forever. You can sleep in it and wake up looking good. I use Olay Regenerist Daily Rejuvenating Serum under it, so I never feel dried out. Waterproof eyeliner and mascara, tiny amounts of powder blush on cheeks and lids and a Chanel lipstick - usually the only kind I use because it's not too dry or too greasy. The most I ever need is a touch-up from the compact and a bit of lipstick. I try not to sleep on the plane, no matter how long the flight, and I always have snacks in my bag to keep my blood-sugar stable. Between the iPod, the phone and a few magazines I buy at the airport, I always have plenty of music, movies or TV, games and reading material. On a really long flight, I take out my laptop and write so I stay ahead of my blog, or I doodle in a Moleskine sketchbook. I usually have a pocket size set of watercolor paints and a couple of Niji waterbrushes, too, if the mood strikes.Posted by Morgaine Swann | May 22 2007 3:05PM
I am sure to wear something that is not constricting, but still stylish like a comfortable pair of jeans, t-shirt, cute jacket and flat heeled shoes. Wear hair in a high ponytail (for a no-fuss style) and diamond stud earrings (really makes the earrings stand-out). I always carry my L.L. Bean bote and tote bag full of magazines, my iPod, lipgloss, and a travel blanket. Mints/gum are always good to have with you also!Posted by Vanessa | May 22 2007 2:41PM
besides the obvious comforts of loose yet well fitting cotton jersey pants and my favorite suppa soft hoodie with ever soft socks on my feet. i wear no makeup, just a ton of hope is a jar mosturizer and eye cream. i bring demalogica wipes for behind my neck, shoulders and wrists. when i feel my body drying up i smoother my lips with epicuren lip balm. put a little shea butter on my hands and spritz my face with pangea organics facial toner in italian green mandarin. ahhh. makes me want to take a trip just thinking about it!Posted by una mae's | May 22 2007 1:52PM
I start and end my trip with limo service to and from the airport. A Lincoln towncar costs less than a cab where I live and the driver helps with my bags (and the kids). I wear loose, comfortable clothes after dousing myself with baby powder (to absorb perspiration) and have my iPod loaded with at least three audio books and two movies. If I am traveling with my children, I either mail or FedEx most of their clothes, toys, etc. so everything is waiting for me upon arrival. My carry on has an inflatable pillow, toothpaste/brush, moist toweletts, and earplugs. I am a fanatic about not getting sick from breathing air infected with various airborn viruses. I apply a small amount of Polysporin ointment to a Q-Tip and rub it deep inside my nostrels. I also use a "Plane Clean Air" device. It is a personal air filter that attaches to the overhead adjustable air nozzle and removes viruses and bacteria in the air.Posted by Cynthia | May 22 2007 1:18PM
I pack a blanket set since airline blankets aren't always laundered between flights. I got mine at www.flight001.com. The PB Blanket set included a fleece wrap, eye mask and cotton pillowcase that fold into a compact pouch. I also pack disposable toothettes (which clean your teeth without paste) you can buy them at www.magellans.com. Finally, I slip into some Karen Neuburger's Carpooler Chenille Lounce socks. I take a drammamine or two, slip on my ipod, use my eye mask, and get ready to wake up at my fabulous destination.Posted by Betsy H | May 22 2007 12:25PM
I would treat myself to a glass of Krug, followed by a gallon of SEI water, while cleaning my palms with baby wipes and face with an Evian Brumisateur. Lather myself in Bobbi Brown's "Beach" lotion and drift away on my travels with my head on MY OWN travel pillow.Posted by Amanda | May 22 2007 12:16PM
Take the Red-eye flight! You'll walk off the looking refresh.Posted by Lo | May 22 2007 11:58AM
Always carry a toothbrush and some toothpaste. Nothing is more unwelcoming then greeting your awaiting party with some rank breath.Posted by Kat | May 22 2007 11:25AM
First off, comfortable shoes that are easy on and off, so you don't hold up the line and get dirty looks while going through security. Secondly, I swell up like the Hindenburgh when I fly, so I need some shoes with some room. I always feel badly for those fashionista clowns who totter off the plane in tight pumps. You just KNOW their toes are little Vienna sausages stuffed in there. Secondly; layers, as airplane temperatures fluctuate constantly. The top layer is a jacket that doesn't wrinkle easily, so it can be used as a pillow, when the one the airline has given me falls backward through the crack in the seat, and is absconded by the passenger behind me. Thirdly, a pair of large sunglasses which can be used to mask any eyeliner that has smudged while sleeping. In addition, even if you have large goofy, albeit comfortable shoes, large dramatic sunglasses will still manage to convey a hint of elegance and elan. Lastly, water, water water, and no booze, no booze, no booze...The novelty of a buzz wearing off and waking up dehydrated like an Egyptian mummy lost it's appeal about 246 flights ago.Posted by Bridget | May 22 2007 10:39AM
My secret to staying fresh on the plane involves a routine that makes traveling comfortable. It all begins a week before flying if possible. I take my Echinacea tea at least once a day, as airplanes are a virus trap and often people catch the flu there. Of course, I drink lots of water the day of travel. I wear comfortable clothes, jeans and my very comfortable Thomas Wylde sneakers- you need socks now that you have to take the shoes off and who wants their feet touching the nasty airport floor-yuck. I buy magazines at the airport, because I don't want to carry heavy books and love to discover new mags. For the plane I love the Dreamsack traveling set that includes a cashmere blanket, an eye mask, and pillow set. That coupled with my ipod and I'm set to go. Now the real secret to feeling and looking fresh when you leave the plane is to wear little make up beforehand, and half hour before landing I clean my face with the Chanel cleansing milk, which protects against pollutants and hydrates your skin. Now that we can't bring many liquids in, I found a great alternative is to bring a Kiehls Gentle Cleanser sample (which is the perfect size) and it also works wonders. I also try to bring a perfume sample and apply that at the end of my trip (you never know if your scent will annoy other passengers so I leave it to the end to perfume). Then I apply my make-up and when I leave the plane I don't look like I just traveled for ten hours. I feel clean, fresh, and smell good too!Posted by agent2274 | May 22 2007 10:34AM
Join the Mile High Club: Keeps the blood flowing, provides brief cardio exercise, promotes flexibility, uses problem-solving skills (ie how to avoid getting caught).Posted by Cristina | May 22 2007 10:31AM
Be sure to get the blood flowing pre- and post-flight by not taking the moving walkways. This ensures you won't bypass a stop in the Duty Free store, where you can freshen up before and after the flight by "sampling" their products. Before hopping on the plan for my last overnight red eye, I was sure to slather on La Mer night cream. And after the flight, I stopped in to use a body refresher, facial moisturizer, foundation, and light fragrance. This way I'm not weighed down by all my bottles, which would probably be filled with too much liquid to prevent me from passing through security. Plus, it's a great way to sample new products while killing time before a flight or during a layover!Posted by kathryn | May 22 2007 10:24AM
First I dress in something comfy like a knee length C & C California Jersey dress and flip flops. I personally don't like wear anything that doesn't have give because you want to be comfy. I never trust the airplane pillows or blankets so I always pack a pashmina and neck pillow...as well as a lavendar scented eye mask to dim the brightness of people reading or people have their window shades open. For freshning up...esp. to long overseas flights...I always pack travel size deoderant, toothbrush, toothpaste, Evian mist or some form of toner, lotion and of course hair accessories. My hair gets flat from the altitude so I make sure I have something handy for a quick fix.Posted by Fashion Therapist | May 22 2007 10:01AM
Get yourself a Ice Pack and pat it around your body then take deep breathes and drink lots of water. Top it off with a good smelling body lotion and relax.Posted by MCJunkie | May 22 2007 9:59AM
I always remove my contact lenses and take off my shoes. Airline air is so awful on the eyes when you are wearing contacts. Also, I always get an aisle seat so I can move around. Drink plenty of water and avoid the booze. I will never forget to bring my iPod again. Took a flight last week to London and the airplanes entertainment system stopped working.Posted by Molly B | May 22 2007 9:57AM
First, dress comfy- loose clothing, flip flops or UGGs. Bring a sweatshirt or sweater since planes tend to be a little chilly. Bring along magazines or books and your iPod loaded with your favorite music. For long flights, I carry Ponds facial wipes and mid flight I will use them to wash my make up off and then reapply. For shorter flights, I swear by Shu Umera DepSea Chamomile Facial Spray. It gives my skin moisture while also soaking up excess oil- and you'll instantly feel refreshed. Also, drink A LOT of water to keep skin from dehydrating.Posted by Lauren | May 22 2007 9:54AM
I travel with a mini air purfier that hangs around my neck. You can add a couple of drops of water to the little filters, adjust the position, and relax as it "blows" fresh air around your nose. Keeps you hydrated and potentially germ-free from the passenger with pleurisy next to you :-) Add my late uncle's Saville Row lined leather jacket, and I'm good to go.Posted by Lori | May 22 2007 9:43AM
When I fly I first shower w/ chanel Bath Gel. I then moisturize all over and only moisturizer on my face. I wear the best comfy clothes I have (sometimes even PJ's) drink lots of water w/lemon wedges. Grab the best book I have wrap up in MY blanket and READ a juicy novel. I like to meet people and get to know them So if anyone next to wants to talk I love to share stories and laughter. The next best thing is to help anyone on board that may need an extra pair of hands. Time Flys by!!!!!Posted by Donegalbay | May 22 2007 9:39AM
I get to the sirport in plenty of time, relax in an airline club, and use all my favorite moisturizers and skin care products generously before getting on the plane (and clean carefully after because the recirculated air is grimy). I also dress comfortably but stylishly because it makes me feel good. I bring a pashmina in case the blankers are inadequate, and lots of reading. A lot of water, one glass of wine, and I can sleep. Also --- I try to pack a healthy calorie controlled snack since even in first airline food is dreadful. An aisle non bulkhead seat is essential if possible -- one can get up that way and also keep possessions close by. Finally, an extra pair of socks for warm feet is a must.Posted by Coastcommuter | May 22 2007 9:39AM
this can be very simple. Drink lots of water the day before and the day of the trip. This will shield against airplane germs and help your skin throughout the flight. During the flight, if need be, a simple baby wipe can be all the hypo-allergenic freshening up you need.Posted by Samantha | May 22 2007 9:36AM
I fly a lot, and usually long distance. over the years I've developed a complete regimen for staying fresh and healthy. First, I take my knee-high tension socks, to acoid any unsightly bruises on my legs. I wear a casual but chic outfit, usually sand tones, with lots of layers, as i find it gets chilly onboard especially at night. I also bring my own pashmina, which is so much more comfy than the supplied blankets, unless i'm lucky enough to fly flatbed.. I have my Origins pillow spray in bergamot, which is very comforting and relaxing, which i spray around my seat. i bring my own earplugs and ipod to relax and sleep. I find the Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream is great on board, and in between i freshen up with Jurlique rose water or travel spray. Hydrating and depuffing eyecream is essential and i particularly like the Kinerase one right now. Eyedrops such as Visine really do take away those red-eyes. Further more a travel toothbrush and mini toothpaste complete the fresh feeling. Now all i need is a bit of luck with the person next to me! it would be useful to give check-in agents a mini course in matchmaking...Posted by Flygirl | May 22 2007 9:30AM
Ice cubes with a splash of wine; a personal air filter (those ugly, flashing things you wear around your neck; I never catch a cold when I wear one); a lightweight fleece blanket and flannel pillowcase from home; a fancy chocolate bar; Kiehl's Calendula Toner; Good Breath Parsley Capsules for non-stinky breath; a tiny handheld fan to blow away the overbearing perfume of the person sitting next to me; UGGS low cut boots (your feet can expand to three times their normal size and you'll still be comfy); New Yorker Magazine; my Ipod.Posted by laalaapo | May 22 2007 9:28AM
The secret is tons of water, Remede's "Skin Exacting Mask" and when they announce that we are starting to descend, I ask for a cup of ice and chill an eyemask to wear for 5-10 minutes. Voila!Posted by cc | May 22 2007 9:27AM
Hello- I travel with a little bottle of water (if it does not make it through security, then I buy one in the airport), and start sipping before lift off. I dress in layers, in case the plane is freezing, cashmere on top preferred! I bring with me some headphones (hate crying babies, and snorers), and listen to soothing music on my ipod. Also, If I can slip it in , I bring rose water , or some spritzy evian for refreshing, and waking up. I also always wear comfy shoes,,,nothing like hurting feet on a long flight. I pack the stillettos and change in the hotel!!Posted by Madforfashion | May 22 2007 9:24AM

When flying my choice drink is o.j. with ice and then lots of water. Bose noise cancellation headphones help a ton and sometimes if I'm not listening to music, to give my eyes a rest (and one less object to hassle with) I listen to a book on cd (i.e. on my ipod). For freshening up, i bring along Dr. Hauschka cleansing milk and toner. Spritzing that makes me feel way better and rejuivenated. Getting up and stretching helps and making sure i've got comfortable shoes (or even just flip flops) is key. Usually if i'm going to a cold area, instead of stuffing a large jacket in my luggage (and taking up precious room for more outfits) I take that on board with me and subsitute that for the odd-smelling blanket.Posted by Fuzzybunnie | May 21 2007 2:24PM
