Hilfiger's own kind of MTV
Tommy Hilfiger has teamed up with music giant Sony BMG to launch www.tommytv.com, a fashion and music online TV channel. It broadcasts live performances sponsored by Tommy Hilfiger, alongside exclusive artist
interviews and backstage footage. Maybe Tommy is trying to fill the gap left by MTV and VH-1, whose programming seems to revolve entirely around ghastly (yet highly addictive) reality TV shows? (Who doesn't love to hate Flavor of Love?)
The site will be the home of Hilfiger Auditions, an online competition where young artists can showcase their talent. Is Simon Cowell is quaking in his high-waisted slacks, I wonder? Doubt it.
The station launched in London with a live performance by French duo "One-Two", who I have never heard of, but that means nothing. (I only listen to vinyl these days and can't abide the tinny quality of MP3s.)
Hilfiger told reporters at the launch that moving into the music biz was a no-brainer—apparently he always wanted to dress like Mick Jagger, Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page. Perhaps he should introduce more feather boas and leather trousers into his next collection?
