What's the Story?
Headaches and kids programming go hand in hand. Once upon a time, children’s entertainment included an acoustic guitar and a mellow rendition of "This Little Light of Mine." Favorite records were Really Rosie, Hans Christian Anderson and Free to Be You and Me. These days, certain purple dinosaurs and "wiggling" dancers make parents' lives a little more painful. Thankfully, writer and longtime children's columnist Amy Friedman created Tell Me a Story, an audio-only collection of adapted folktales originally found everywhere from Mississippi to Kyoto. Obie award winners to sitcom regulars perform the pieces with varied musical accompaniment, so that kids can listen in the car or at home and actually imagine the world being described, instead of watching passively. The National Parenting Publications Award-winning CD is being performed live at the Geffen Playhouse November 18. $18.95, mythsandtales.com
