Make No Bones
Angelenos are no strangers to red carpet hoopla. In fact, big flashy premieres are every day business for many industry folk and, especially since Brangelina made charity trendy, a philanthropic element is practically a given. Still, even Hollywood stars who are less accustomed to L.A.’s high-culture art and fashion events may have been surprised by the 600-person turn out for the opening dinner fête celebrating MOCA’s big winter show (italicize) Skin + Bones: Parallel Practices in Art & Architecture, which raised funds for the museum’s education program. Guests including actors like Ashton & Demi, Eva Mendes, Debi Mazar, Rachel Griffiths and her husband artist Andrew Taylor, Leonard and Susan Nimoy, and Michele Hicks, artists John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha and Todd Eberl, designers like local Grant Krajecki of Grey Ant, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte and Ruben and Isabel Toledo and several architects included in the show gathered to preview the work, which highlights new and old fashion greats from Vivienne Westwood to Viktor & Rolf and celebrity architects like OMA/Rem Koolhaas and Frank Gehry, with a live soundtrack by DJ trio MisShapes. Next diners were treated to a Patina catered meal and a solo performance by music legend Rufus Wainwright. Apparently LA can do fashion events too. MOCA, 250 S. Grand Ave., (213) 621-2766
