Myrtle, Rosemary and Thyme
The olden days aren’t necessarily associated with good scents. In the Middle Ages they never bathed. In the Little House on the Prairie era, everyone smelled like cattle. Maybe in ancient Egypt the oils were aromatic, but what good is smelling amazing when you’re mummified? Still, certain parts of the world—like France—are known for their long history of perfume making. Now Roger & Gallet, one of the foremost perfumers helmed by Yves Saint Laurent, is celebrating their 200th anniversary with limited-edition bottles of their signature scent Jean Marie Farina, which is infused with bergamot, lemon, orange-tinged neroli and petit grain and green heart (myrtle, rosemary and thyme). Reportedly this perfume—now specially packaged with gold flakes—was a favorite of Napoleon and Josephine the Empress of France & Queen of Italy. And of course the history of perfume is extra chic, as we anticipate the upcoming 18th century thriller (italicize) Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. Do we smell fear? $42-$145, LA: Ron Robinson, Apothia, 8118 Melrose Ave., (323) 651-0239, NY: New London Pharmacy, 246 8th Ave., (212) 243-4987, perfumebay.com
