Inventing the Abbot
For subjects, many an artist has chosen mundane objects (like Campbell’s soup cans), natural landscapes or elements of urban decay. In all cases, the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Well, L.A. artist Carlos Reyes combines all three themes. Tonight from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Equator Books and Gallery in Venice, Reyes’ photography show and release party for his limited edition book Canyon Drives depicts enlarged images of sidewalk cracks that, when pieced together, resemble maps. And in some ways, the sidewalk’s erosion does map the paths we take on a daily basis. Art works and books will be on sale, as will many other fabulous items in surrounding boutiques, as tonight is also the annual Abbot Kinney Holiday Festival. DJs, drinks, sweets and even Santa will abound, plus expect a special appearance by British musician Kris Searle at U.K.-designer boutique Brick Lane. Tis the season! Books $50 and up, Artwork $500 and up, Equator Books and Gallery, 1103 Abbot Kinney Blvd., (310) 399-5544
