Avant savants: Boudicca
British fashion innovators Boudicca showcased their artistic vision in Paris for the first time with shoulderpadded floral-print catsuits, stirruped tight-leggings and a pointy-shouldered black and white gown that somehow evoked both Elizabeth I and Gloria Swanson in the same breath. What else would you expect from the design visionaries who, when commissioned to decorate the Victoria and Albert museum's Christmas tree in London last year, adorned it simply with a little doll looking down from the top, a long ribbon, weird sounds and aromas.
Boudicca is only the fifth British fashion house to have been admitted to the Chambre Syndicale, meaning they are officially in the haute couture realm. The black and brilliant white palette was fresh, never church somber. The hair was crimped flapper, and the makeup evocative of silent movies. Showing just 11 pieces, Boudicca got their postmodernism just right, subtly blending historical influences and modern venturings to create a whole that was far greater than the sum of its parts.
