Office parties: Why?

Office parties: Why? Why? Why?More Martinelli’s, anyone? No thanks. There’s nothing worse than those forced, awkward gatherings in the conference room for a co-worker’s birthday or send-off. (Witness this staged shot from a birthday party—with mucho multicultural models!—for a Glamour magazine editor in the '70s. I love that one dude even wore a tux.) Typically, the guest of honor gets a few moments of attention before everyone resumes complaining about Carol’s smelly hot tuna sandwiches or the new curmudgeon who is cutting expense accounts. Then, there’s the ubiquitous occasion card festooned with sad one-liners like “Oh no! Who’s going to replace the toner?” or for that guy in accounting, “Party like it’s 1099, Ed!” Studios and talent agencies typically frown upon these sugar-fueled work interruptions. I do too. Cheap cake and cider depress me. Martinis after work make me happy. And you? Share your own workplace par-tay experiences at TheStylephile.com and find out why Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel are loving plastic bags.
