Women’s Work

Directing Workshop for Women deadlineIt’s been a while since men truly wore the pants, hasn’t it? It feels that way, especially since guys started stealing our face masques and appropriating items from our wardrobes like skinny jeans and tight tees. Is anything sacred? Actually, in certain segments of the entertainment industry women still don’t come close to ruling the roost. Sure, you D-girls are doing fine, but when it comes to the other big "D"—directing—women and minorities are only creating 17% of prime time’s shows, according to a recent study. We don’t even need to speak on the whole women directors and Oscar issue. Thankfully, AFI offers eight lucky ladies a year the chance to train as directors, free of tuition in their prestigious Directing Workshop for Women. This year the early application deadline with reduced fee is December 1.

January 5 is the final chance. So join the ranks of Anne Bancroft, Ellen Burstyn, plus directors of Grey’s Anatomy, Sex and the City and Children of a Lesser God. It’s about time we learn to be direct. $75-$100, Download applications at: afi.com/education/dww
