Oh My Goth!

Oh My Goth! Bones strewn on a runway. Models with licorice-shaded lips wearing black hooded capes. Welcome to the Imitation of Christ show, which took place on Monday night at Smashbox. Pixie designer and local heroine Tara Subkoff sent out a collection during fashion week that never varied from a dour palette of black, cream, and weak tea-hued neutral. The highlights—and most wearable pieces—were a set of black leather and black satin trench coats, beaded shifts (think Lulu Brooks on parole) and spangled tops. What struck me was that these models looked like the type of girls in high school who would borrow your prized blush and keep it. The fact that they were checking their cell phones on the runway seemed like a nod to invasive technology and Paris Hilton’s poor manners until I realized that Samsung sponsored the after-party. The smart takeaway for front row denizens? A bag of Smashbox products used in the show, including black eyeliner, black mascara, and Enchanting lipstick in “Yo! Can I borrow your blush?” plum.
