The Surreal Life

You’re the pop culture king. There isn’t a current reality show or indie band that you don’t know intimately. Still, you’re foggy on everything pre-new millennium, which is why you stay away from those stodgy museums. Um guess again, Flavor of Love Monkey, the two new shows that opened this past weekend at LA’s biggest museums are anything but antiquated. At LACMA, Magritte and Contemporary Art: The Treachery of Images goes way beyond a standard retrospective, juxtaposing contemporary artists from Richard Prince to Jeff Koons with the surrealist’s masterpieces. Most exciting is the décor and curatorial role adopted by beloved LA artist John Baldessari, who has carpeted the floors in blue skies with fluffy clouds, covered the ceiling in overlapping freeways, and framed wall text with images of green leaves. Meanwhile at MOCA, Skin + Bones: Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture examines designers from Commes des Garcon to Alexander McQueen and architects from Frank Gehry to Rem Koolhaas.
