Sugar Hangover

Avoid a sugar hangover by trying other tasty treatsAt recent girly events around town, there are two inevitable sightings: first, an inordinate amount of grown women in baby doll dresses and ballet flats, signaling that the trend will soon die. Secondly, without fail refreshments include a spread of sugary cupcakes, champagne and super sweetened "vitamin water"—why not call it clear fruit punch and get it over with? Are the seemingly innocent event planners coaxing us into a more suggestive state of sugar shock? Once upon a year or two ago, cupcakes were novel. Now they’re everywhere and impossible to eat gracefully, especially while juggling a glass of champagne and a clutch. Seriously, red velvet cake was not designed to be consumed daily. Anyone who has ever successfully inhaled that lethal champagne and red velvet combo is nauseous just reliving the moment. If we must have cupcakes, make them tiny bite size ones from Butter Cake Bakery, which are easier to eat and won’t send us into diabetic orbit. Otherwise, how about balancing with some savory snacks like Spinach and Feta purse pastries from Little Next Door or signature Pretzel Croissants from City Bakery? Then maybe one day we can shed our baby dolls and all just get along. Dare to dream. BCB: .75¢ each, LND: $3.50-$6.50 each, CB: $3.50 each, Butter Cake Bakery: (310) 470-6770, Little Next Door: (323) 951-1010, City Bakery: (310) 656-3040

The bitesize cupcakes at Sugar on La Brea are THE BEST. . You must try the "I Do Declare" and the "Blueberry Pancake" version. Sugar on La Brea is a fantastic clothing store which also sells cupcakes by order only. I have tried all the cupcakes in LA (no, not over the trend yet) and these are the best (sprinkles on the bottom).
