Wednesday giveaway--Tarina Tarantino choker

I first met Tarina Tarantino a couple of years back, at a dinner following an art show by Miami low-brow duo Friends With You. I remember she and her husband Alfonso were being followed around by a camera crew. She was seated across from me at dinner and was sweet and gracious. Her pink hair, longer then than it is now, was a never-ceasing source of fascination for me. How does one keep one's hair that shade of fuchsia, without it bleeding on to the pillow? I wondered if she was born with it that color. Tarantino, fresh from the launch of her new Tokyo Hardcore Collection, has generously offered to gift a Stylephile reader one of these sassy chokers from the collection. Worth $100, the neon translucent bubble beads would make a great talking point teamed with an all black outfit, don't you think?

To win, simply leave a comment telling us about the most interesting hair color you have ever had. Be sure to leave your email address in the body of the comment. Deadline is Wednesday December 12 at 5p.m.

The most interesting hair color I've ever had is my natural shade. I have a unique shade of auburn that turns fire-engine red when the sun hits it. In the summer, however, I get huge streaks of a strange bright blonde right at my hairline. It looks so funny, almost like a dye-job gone horribly wrong.

in college i thought my really maroon/mauve hair (self dyed, of course) was julia roberts auburn. the pictures tell a really different story. snorth@currentmedia.com

it was a dark blue (almost a blue back) - very subtle on my very dark brown hair. People would always ask is that a dark blue shade in your hair? And I would tease no, what are you talking about? My hair is dark brown. It was a mind game.

In high school, I gave myself highlights with Jolen bleach. The effects varied from application to application, from season to season (summer sun had a potent effect). I remember fondly one summer trip to the zoo. There was a fox (maybe a wolf) who shared my Debbie Harry roots.

My craziest hair color was Bozo the Clown Red. It was short and curly and as it faded out, my hair started to look like little orphan Annie's. People would follow me down the halls of my high school singing "The sun will come out, to-morrow, betcha bottom dollar, that tomorrow, there'll be suuuuun..."

I've been blonde, red-headed, and brunette, but my hair has never been an "out of the ordinary" shade. The most interesting is what has been happening lately...little strands of gray. I say it's interesting because whenever I see one I think, "how the heck did that happen??" Thanks, stigay (at) comcast.net

When I was in junior high, I decided that it would be a fantastic idea if I were to take my long bangs, part them harshly down the middle, and bleach them out to make skunk-like stripes down the sides of my face... only problem was that I have dark dark brown hair, so the hair turned a putrid yellow. At fourteen, though, this was amazing! Then, I took Manic Panic hair dye and slapped that on top of the blonde and brunette, which, needless to say, was the "toning down" I needed. So the front was bright magenta (my fave and the SAME color as the Tarina necklace at hand!) and the dark hair had a purplish-pink glow. I played goalie in lacrosse at the time and you could see my hair through the helmet! I only have one picture of this. Needless to say, it's hidden very well. (The pink stained by the way, and I had to wait and grow out my bangs!!) Ah... memories! -- EricaRuvolo@gmail.com

ingrid1721@yahoo.com wrote: I wanted chestnut highlights in my hair, and I told my hair dresser how I wanted it and pictures to boot, now keep in mind this is my first time getting highlights and my hairdresser was real BIG on color (so big that one time she wanted to dye my hair red ala Keisha Cole, but I was like no thanks) so my hairdresser says "great I am so excited! you are going to look the bomb!" Well BOMB I did, like some one threw a grenade on my hair, she used bleach and I had a perm so some parts were dyed white and the rest was gold highlights, needless to say I went with it and in some photos and such it looked great it took me awhile to get my hair back to normal but at least I got compliments on it, you live, laugh and learn ; ) Cheers!

I'm color-blind, so I can only believe it when other people tell me I've got flaming red hair. For all I know, it's more like cool blue lightning. (The plus side is that I can save money and use one of those old-school black-and-white mirrors when I groom myself.) ditchcake@aol.com

Despite the MANY colors I went through (not all of my own choosing....) when I was competing as a ballroom dancer, from platinum to black lacquer and everything in between - including an extremely unfortunate combination of bright, bright I Love Lucy red and a truly regrettable perm (think Andrea McArdle warbling "Tomorrow"......) - the absolute best color I ever had, was BLACK ORCHID!!! It was a cellophane color, supposedly transparent, but on me, it was BLACK. Until a strong light hit it.... then it just flashed this wonderful purple. Fabulous on the show floor. Not so great, though, at the 7-11 one night when those nasty vapor lights hit me at a bad angle, and a bunch of kids yelled out, "Hey Plumhead! Fruitstand is that way!" stefaniesomers@earthlink.net

The worst color I've ever had was after of a year of not so steady at-home dye kits. I'd leave the color processing for waaaay too long and then wait waaaay too long to color it again. Well, eventually, the bottom half of my hair 30 inches of hair was this dreadful bright orange and the top was the nice burgundy purple shade that was supposed to come out of the box. Glad I chopped it all off finally! It's now a nice range of chestnuts and honeys, wuould look so so glamourous with the Tarina beads!! tosa73@comcast.net

I've had my hair almost every color throughout my life. From light yellows and oranges to deep blues and purples. I also sported black hair with colored highlights (blues, pinks, reds, purples) for awhile. I think my favorite though is when my hair is all pink, which I can happily say that is now. :) rbfdiva@hotmail.com

Mine was what I called a Kate Pearson of the B52s red - I went blonde to what I thought would be strawberry-blonde red to actually a very loud, burgundy red just days before my 16th b-day. Suffice to say, I was not happy with it (I didn’t recognize myself – it was kinda traumatic at that age) and failed my driver's license over the stress and shock of the ordeal of trying to get my hair back to closer to what it once was... I was a ridiculous teen! I drove my mom mad. Poor thing. But luckily over the years I have made a 360 and have been very adventurous with my hair since… just 15-going on 16 was not the time for such a drastic hair color change! I look back now and think how silly I was!

Many years ago, long before neon was considered stylish, I decided to dye my long red hair black for a play. It turned bright orange, of course, and there wasn't even a hint of glamour about it. Never again!

Many years ago living back east I was one of the queens of the hair show circuit. Low and behold my friends were doing the make-up for a big hair event and suggested i got to audition for the show, of course I was chosen and the colorist told me I would look fabulous, I had chosen a funky euro bob as the cut was referenced. I was later prepped for highlights, i'm thinking something warm with a few golden highlights that would complement my skin tone. Nooo! I remove the towel from my head I jumped, in shock because my hair was sparkling janet jackson red and in the sun hot red. I survived, buy many mornings that followed I often forgot and would be startled by one glance. I thought my friends and colleagues would think I looked like a red head reject but everyone loved the hair and I received compliments from many strangers on a daily basis, of course this calmed my nerves. I let the color grow out with the exception of one inch which had to be colored over and over again to retain my original hair color. Smooches to the red heads! veniusadams@hotmail.com

amazingly, my black hair is still pretty much the color i was born with! except for a stint when i started spritzing a raspberry body splash into my hair bc i'd read that hair retains more scent than skin does. suddenly, everyone was complimenting the subtle reddish highlights in my hair! so - that was the best - i was unaware that i'd actually "changed" (barely) my haircolor, but once I noticed it, I loved it!

I have boring dark brown hair. I have decided to stick it, but I like to add richness to it. My favorite hair color also has my favorite name - Violet Brown!

When I first moved to LA, many years ago, I decided to dye a large strip in the front of my barbie blonde hair a deep, dark purple. I thought it looked awesome and couldn't wait to go home for Christmas with my new edgy 'do. After not seeing my mother for almost a year, I expected a warm, welcoming homecoming. Instead, she took one look at my hair, burst into hysterics, sobbing something about looking like a drug dealer hanging out at the Lakeshore Mall and she was ashamed of me, then stormed off to her bedroom screaming "Merry Christmas to me and your daddy!!!" as the door slammed shut. She didn't speak to me the rest of the evening and the next morning at 8am my aunt called me begging me to remove it and offering to pay to have my blonde restored. I'm still mad at myself for caving in and taking it out, but my friends and I have had a good time with her Merry Christmas comment, repurposing it for many comical occasions. louwilgirl at yahoo dot com

years ago, my boss suggested that instead of my blonde hair, I should go dark. thinking "that's an interesting way to get a rung up the corporate ladder" I was quick to comply, and became a brunette. My boss was equally quick to comment he guessed I was a blonde. not being able to afford another hair appointment, I bought a blonde at home color kit. the end result was a combination of bozo pink roots with eggplant ends. this happened years ago, but friends still mention it, and my mother never forgave me for showing up at my cousin's wedding with my new 'do.

I have had almost every "non fluorscent" color of hair in my lifetime. In my twenties, I use you color my hair every other week. I am a natural blonde. The kind that everyone tries to copy, but I didn''t wan that color. I thought people were much more interesting with dark hair. One of the colors was a dark auburn. I thought that somehow it made me less of a goodie-two-shoes and made me "cooler." My best friend took some black and white photos of me pretending to smoke and drink. Ahh...to be twenty again...NEVER again....I am SO much more comfortable in my own skin nowadays (41!) and my hair is my natural color. A much better fit for me! jennifer@kleanbathandbody.com

My favorite was my last "do" - white platinum blonde on top and dark cabernet underneath. My hair is short and I would do it with a curled flip all around so that the two colors were showed off to their best advantage. When I changed my hair to something more tame I got lots of comments from disappointed people apparently living vicariously through my hair! ;) vienazee@hotmail.com

the most interesting hair color i ever had was orange.. i was about 14 years old.. and my natural hair color is dark brown and for some ridiculous reason i thought that the take home dye kit (that i scrounged my house for all and any loose change) would actually turn my dark luscious locks to that lemony gold color that was a)in the picture description and b)i always wanted.. well by the time i finished blow drying my hair.. the end result was orange. so id have to say that for those 3 months it was the most interesting color i have ever "not" tried to do in my life.

never one to mess with my almost natural auburn hair - so nice with my bleu-green eyes - i did have a lapse of judgement in my late twenties. It was the summer I had quit my boring job and spend my time making jewelry and tanning my pale body to a deep golden brown. I decided to become a blonde, a really bad idea with my yellowish complexion. I fried my hair and then had to cut it to get it healthy again. Now, i only dye my hair to get rid of the grey and it's back to an almost auburn color and looks so natural. Never again! stacey@staceyandco.com

chicdiva04@aol.com: My most interesting hair color is actually my natural color. My hair is black, but I started going grey in my early 20s (a trait from my father- thanks Dad!). Fortunately it hasn't been too bad- I have a natural silver streak in my hair at the front which I have played up at times and it has given my hairstyle a cool and unusual edge to it.

My most interesting hair colour was 4 colors in one. My hairstylist played with ash blondes, honey brown, dark brown, golden blonde. I really liked it because despite the number of colors, he was able to put it together that came across appealing. clear888[at]gmail[dot]com

the most interesting hair color i have ever had is indigo blue. i loved that haircolor!!!

ournewsong@gmail.com When I was a punk rawker in high school I was really into hot pink. So I dyed it hot pink with special effects haircolour (way more potent than manic panic) and blended in red at the roots and blue from the bottom up. The result? Red - Hot Pink - Purple - Indigo Blue gradient

I once put some rad purple mascara in my hair (yes, with the mascara applicator). Not only was it clumpy and hideous, but nobody even noticed it. Or worse yet, maybe they noticed and cared not to comment. bookings@sharonaq.com

traymona@aol.com My most interesting hair color I ever had was the color I was born with, a copper red. I hated it until I was old enough to appreciate the uniqueness of it.

I once had zebra-striped brown and blonde hair, after a very bad at-home dye job. It lasted for just one day during my college winter break. But the event was so memorable that my friends and family still talk about it. krisnyu@yahoo.com

My most interesting hair colour, is my present hair - tri-colour, naturally auburn which is darkening, highlighted streaks which are half grown out, and underlying grey which is fast and furious working its' way to the exterior.
