Phyllis Diller, meet the hipsters

Paper, the New York style magazine, is taking up residence in Los Angeles for its annual five-day cultural marathon this week. And this time around they are looking to the past for inspiration, with co-editor and founder Kim Hastreiter (the subject of a lengthy New Yorker profile not so long ago) bringing veteran comedienne Phyllis Diller into the fray.
Diller will show a number of her own paintings at Paper's "Cultural Storefront", a Barbara Bestor-designed gallery space on 233 S. La Brea Ave, on Wednesday November 7 from 5p.m. to 8p.m. The show will also feature polaroids taken by local eccentric Henny Garfunkel. Both Diller and Garfunkel will be on site.
Other Paper events in L.A. this week include a Michael Jackson dance off co-hosted by Parisian ultra-boutique Collette, with dance floor tuition given by fashion designer Jeremy Scott. This is not a joke. And for the marginally less energetic, there's a backyard party at the Venice atelier of furniture and ceramics designer Elizabeth Paige Smith. Unlike the Phyllis Diller art show, neither of the latter two events are open to the public. So if you have strings, we suggest you pull them.
