Fashion Show

LACMA’s Breaking the ModeIn many ways couture fashion and contemporary art are similar.  Firstly they both confuse the general public, lacking “practical purpose” and all.  Secondly both artists and fashion designers are notoriously idiosyncratic.  Thirdly, when successful, both endeavors push the boundaries of the norm.  So LACMA’s curators probably didn’t endure too tough an adjustment when organizing Breaking the Mode: Contemporary Fashion from the Permanent Collection, now open. Broken down by construction, materials, form and concept, the show examines international designers like Jean-Paul Gaultier, Hussein Chalayan, Christian Lacroix, Issey Miiyake, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and more who they argue rebelled against the rigid principles of 1950s high fashion in the 80s and 90s.  $9, lacma.org, 5905 Wilshire Blvd.
