Portrait of an Artist

Once upon a time, hotels were just places to sleep overnight in foreign cities. Now they claim the hottest bars, host Oscar Suites and even display art exhibits. On Wednesday evening at NineThirty and the W Los Angeles’ Living Room, tastemakers gathered to toast (and eat black and white photography-inspired food like organic sweet onion and cauliflower soup with crispy blue point oysters and American caviar) in honor of show "In My Stairwell" by Mark Seliger, curated by Guy Hepner. The hot artist displayed portraits--taken in his West Village studio's stairwell--of celebrities like Chris Martin of Coldplay, David Bowie, Jerry Seinfeld (pictured here), Salma Hayek, Susan Sarandon, Adrian Brody, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Krall and Elvis Costello, and Julia Roberts. Proceeds from the sale of a Muhammad Ali and Michael J. Fox portrait will go to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. The show will be up through June 24. Photographs: $2,500 and up, markseliger.com, ninethirtyw.com
