Variety's auction for St Jude hospital

Yesterday I received a sad email from a member of the Variety team—our online auction fundraiser for St Jude Children's Research Hospital is doing well, but not as well as had been hoped. "I don't know if it's the current economic climate," she wondered, asking if maybe the readers of The Stylephile would be able to help, before the auction closes today (at around 4 p.m.).
I checked out the items being auctioned and they are not to be sniffed at—a two night stay at the new London  Hotel in West Hollywood (pictured), "High School Musical" memorabilia signed by Corbin Bleu (great holiday gift for your tween), the opportunity to be a guest at a scoring session with composer George S. Clinton, the original "Criminal Minds" script autographed by the entire cast, a "Righteous Kill" movie poster signed by Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, and a "Reno 911" costume signed by the entire cast (what a great Halloween outfit that would be!).
All proceeds will help St. Jude Children's Research Hospital find cures for children with catastrophic illnesses through research and treatment. St. Jude covers all costs not covered by insurance for medical treatment, and families without insurance do not pay. St. Jude freely shares its research findings with doctors and scientists around the world.
The auction closes TODAY between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. You can view the entire list of items being auctioned here.

Grande dame Rosamond Bernier opens up her vintage couture closet

A connoisseur of the finest of arts and highest of cultures, New York socialite Rosamond Bernier has a wardrobe that befits her status as an international grande dame. For the first time ever, she will be opening up that legendary wardrobe for a sale on Yoox.com, the highlight of which is Bernier’s haute couture water-print taffeta ball gown designed in 1959 by Yves Saint Laurent for Christian Dior, with its matching evening bag—a rare example from Saint Laurent’s brief reign at Dior, which gave him his entrée into the realm of Parisian high fashion.
Bernier has given more than 200 lectures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many of her talks were about artists whom she counted among her friends: Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, Joan Miró, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti.
Rather than wearing a little black dress for the lectures, she liked to go all out with her high fashion ensembles. “I thought of it as a performance," explains Bernier. Many of those couture dresses remained ‘sleeping beauties‘in her closet until Federico Marchetti of online retailer Yoox.com came along and convinced her to put them up for auction.
Yoox will create a dedicated area featuring excerpts from her lectures, photographs from her personal collection, and a video interview, to establish the biographical context for the selection of vintage pieces available for sale.
Bernier worked for Paris Vogue after World War II before co-founding L’Oeil,  a prestigious art magazine of the era. She has lived in New York for nearly 40 years now with her husband John Russell, a former New York Times art critic. She has been decorated for her contributions to culture, awarded the Legion of Honor and the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres in France, and the Cross of the Order of Isabel la Catolica, bestowed by King Juan Carlos of Spain.
On Yoox.com Rosamond Bernier will comment on each featured item from her wardrobe, sharing her recollections of how and when she acquired it and the noteworthy occasions on which she wore it.
The sale is geared toward serious private collectors and museums. It will also feature a Zandra Rhodes dress from the early 1970’s, a Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel red wool bouclé suit from the early 1980’s and a Kenneth Jay Lane leaf necklace, circa 1970.
The sale starts this Thursday October 23 at around 9 a.m., EST at Yoox.com.

Skagen: The Great Dane

Denmark—it's the happiest place in the world (according to the Global Peace Index), with the highest levels of income equality, a progressive film scene (Lars Von Trier is Danish) and some of Europe's most cutting-edge design. Skagen Denmark, makers of sleek, fairly-priced lifestyle accessories, embodies the Danish spirit of happy excellence. As such I'm delighted  to announce that Skagen Designs is opening its NYC showroom to the public for the first time ever, for a sample sale on October 23 from 8:30 a.m.to 7 p.m. Many of the brand's iconic titanium, stainless steel and leather watches, stylish plastic and metal sunglasses, sleek leather carry-alls and elegant stainless steel jewelry will be deeply discounted. We're told there will also be a selection of little-seen Skagen cashmere sweaters for only $90. A portion of the event's proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer organization in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
All Skagen products are inspired by the Danish village of Skagen, a picturesque artists colony sitting on the tip of the Jutland peninsula. It was Denmark's equivalent of Provincetown in the 1800s, attracting scores of bohemians, artists and writers thanks to the unearthly quality of its light.
The sale takes place for one day only, October 23 from 8:30 a.m.to 7 p.m. at the Skagen Designs showroom, located at 339 5th Avenue, 5th floor (between 33rd and 34th streets).

L.A. sample sale goes online at iShopFem.com

With consumers scrambling for any way to save a buck, society has entered what historians will remember as the Golden Age of the Online Sample Sale—just yesterday, another site launched, iShopFem.com, the e-version of the popular L.A. sample sale event. The site went live with sales on Voom by Joy Han and CC Skye accessories. The first 500 shoppers to register on iShopFem.com will receive a free three-month Premier membership.
Founded by Irene Wong, known in L.A. for her FEM sample sale events,  the new e-commerce site will feature brands at 50 to 75 percent off retail pricing. Wong, a graduate of Parsons and FIDM fashion schools, also promises to showcase wares by emerging designers on the site. She launched iShopFem.com because she felt other sample sale websites were overly exclusive. She wanted her site to be open to anyone, not just invited members. Now that's what I call democracy.

Mandy Moore hosting Gen Art in L.A...tickets available

Mandy Moore will launch Los Angeles Fashion Week when she hosts Gen Art's 11th Annual "Fresh Faces in Fashion" show, featuring twelve of the city's most promising designers.
I'm a fan of hipster Wayne Joffe's Wayne Hadley line, a irreverently forward, tailored men's collection featuring double-breasted outerwear and tux jackets that debuted at LA store Scout (Joffe is pictured below with his pal Lindsay Lohan). I'm also addicted to Michelle Nguyen Williams' French beatnik-inspired  Quail line (I wore nothing but her cute collared racerback jersey dresses this summer). And keep an eye out for Posso's presentation—they make the sexiest spats (pictured) you'll ever see—and Jerome C. Rousseau's collection (he's one of the very few young shoe designers based in L.A.)
Gen Art always presents a delicious clusterf*ck of new design, and while the scene can get a little crowded at times, I urge those Angelenos with an interest in emerging fashion to purchase tickets for the event. You can bet your bottom dollar that the designers you'll see there will go on to big things (remember a little guy called Zac Posen? He's a Gen Art alum. As were Rodarte's Mulleavy sisters and Phillip Lim.)
Other designers showing include: Joel K (KZO), Maxine Dillon, Sandra Sandor (Nanushka), Meredith Fisher (Wayf), Maira Caren (Peonie), Mallyce Miller (LAEKEN), Azature, Laura Kranitz, and Vanessa Giovacchini and Marylouise Pels (Posso)

The show takes place this Friday, October 10, at the Peterson Automotive Museum, 6060 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. Buy tickets here.

Touch the testosterone: Ed Norton's "Fight club" gear, Javier Bardem's "No Country" shirt

If you're creepy like me, you may occasionally fantasize about burying your nose in the armpit of Ed Norton's "Fight Club" shirt, huffing the emasculated sweat like bad glue, getting high on the fumes of his frustration.
Mmmm.

Or perhaps, you lust after Carmen Electra’s gold floral print with white lace trim dress with silver buttons, the one she wore in “Scary Movie 4”.
Whatever your film or TV costume fetish, you're bound to find something to satisfy it at the upcoming Hollywood Roadshow, a huge auction taking place Saturday June 21st and Sunday June 22nd in El Segundo, just south of L.A.
Several hundred items from acclaimed films including “No Country for Old Men”, “Star Wars”, “21 Grams”, and “Lords of Dogtown” (as well as Edward Norton’s personal collection of costumes and key props from “Fight Club”) will be up for bid, with proceeds to benefit the Entertainment Industry Foundation. Additionally, hundreds of movie-themed pinball machines and arcade games including PacMan, Ms. PacMan, Galaga, The Simpson's, Jurassic Park, and many more will be auctioned.
Personally, I'd be psyched to get my hands on Oscar-winner Javier Bardem’s denim jacket, long-sleeve button-up shirt and black "Wrangler" pants (with bloody holes) from “No Country for Old Men”. Or Stacy Peralta’s Graffiti Short Surfboard, used on screen as set decoration in “Lords of Dogtown”.
The live auction will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 21st and June 22nd at Premiere Props’ warehouse in El Segundo, California (128 Sierra Street, El Segundo, CA 90245).  There will be a preview from 9am – 11am, and the auction will begin at 11am. All items will also be for sale to the general public via Hollywoodroadshow.com and eBay.com, with the preview beginning June 21st at 9am and the live auction starting at 11am.

Recession sale in L.A.--LabelNYC

I first talked to fashion designer Laura Whitcomb of Label a couple of years back, when I interviewed her by phone for a style magazine. The story was only supposed to be 300 words in length, but we chit-chatted for over an hour, and when we hung up, I cursed the universe for placing this amazing lady in New York (she has a boutique in Nolita) and me in L.A. That's how cool she was. Life went on of course, and then a month ago I commented on a friend's shirt, and how great the design was. "Oh, it's by my friend Laura Whitcomb," he said. "She runs this line called Label, and she's in L.A."
I called her and she immediately recognized my voice and proceeded to tell me some exciting news: she's holding an L.A. pop-up, selling more than 1000 pieces of archival stock and past seasons' wares at a space in Mid City, spitting distance from  Variety/Condé Nast/LACMA etc.
Some handbags are priced as low as $5.
"We've never done a sale like this before," she said. "We're conscious that some people are starting feel the recession."
LA-based Stylephile readers—the sale continues through Sunday June 8, 11am - 7pm, with beautiful multi-layered jewelry items by ANKH by Racquel jewelry on sale too. I highly recommend you visit, if only to say hi to Ms. Whitcomb. You'll find her very agreeable, I'm sure.
The sale takes place at 609 South Burnside Street, Apartment 103, near LACMA. Call to make an appointment (323) 933-3537.

Yoox.com founder Federico Marchetti scoured estate sales, private collections and Christie's auctions, handpicking the items , which also include a haute couture cocktail dress from 1967 that once belonged to Maria Félix, and a 1960s amethyst and rhinstone necklace owned by fashion journalist Adriana Grassi. Prices range from in the hundreds all the way up to $9,990, with items tracing the evolution of the house, from Christian Dior to Yves Saint Laurent, Gianfranco Ferré, and now, John Galliano.

(Whew! Almost choked on my own hip there!)
The "Warhol Factory X Levi's X Damien Hirst" pop-up shop will pop up this Thursday at Fred Segal Man in Santa Monica. Two hitherto unseen Hirst works (more butterfly corpses, perhaps?) will be unveiled at the event, and we'll celebrate the release of an accompanying 224-page coffee table book, featuring essays and interviews by Steffie Nelson, with Vincent Gallo modeling the goods.
Damien Hirst collaborated with Levi's after coming across the original Warhol-inspired collaboration while shopping at Barney's...which totally backs up my theory that shopping is, indeed, one of the highest forms of meditation in the world.
The launch event takes place Thursday, April 3rd, 2008, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm, at Fred Segal Man Santa Monica, 420 Broadway, Santa Monica, CA 90401.

Diamonds are for puppies

Take the hardest thing in the world (a diamond).
Drape it over the softest thing in the world (a Golden Retriever puppy).
What do you get? The cutest, most luxurious thing since Cottonelle ads.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has partnered up with Chopard to create an exclusive line of limited edition watches and pendants, with floating diamond paws incorporated in the designs. The creations will be exclusively available at Chopard’s Fifth Avenue boutique, with a percentage of sales benefitting the ASPCA. Chopard is also sponsoring the ASPCA's 11th Annual Bergh Ball fundraiser on April 17 at The Plaza Hotel in New York, where Isaac Mizrahi will MC and auction off a series of 'experiences', including lunch with Page Six gossip queen Cindy Adams and an exclusive dinner in your home prepared by Jean-Georges.

Sample sales for boys

I received an email from a reader, TV/film director Michael Addis, requesting more info on sample sales for men. It's true, men do often get left out of the fashion loop, and it's not fair.  So I compiled a list of a few upcoming sample sales that should yield plenty of bargains for XY chromosome-holders.
PS: Addis also asked that I check out his wife's boutique, Poolside in Santa Monica. I haven't had a chance to visit yet, but I think it is very romantic that Mr. Addis (who has directed "The Showbiz Show with David Spade" for Comedy Central) clearly cares about fashion and his wife. What a guy!

A sample sale worth visiting

eM Productions is holding a sample sale that makes our hearts flutter: think Kate and Kass, Suh-tahn (one of the best designers at this year's Gen Art runway show in LA, pictured), Society for Rational Dress and Grey Ant.
These are designers I very much admire, because they are among the few pushing the originality envelope while still making wearable clothing. Although some of the crazier Suh-tahn pieces might have you scratching your head a little.
The sale takes place until December 7 at the Cooper Building downtown. Address 860 S. Los Angeles St. #402, CA 90014. Cash only.
Off topic, I chatted with Corinne Grassini, designer of Society for Rational Dress a couple weeks ago. We were talking about the famous LA cult The Source, as we're both obsessed with it. Led by Father Yod, a bearded shaman with pimp style, the Source family was the most glam commune of its time. They ran a health food restaurant on Sunset Blvd in the seventies, frequented by the likes of John Lennon, Julie Christie and Tony Curtis. The women of the Source family dressed like modern-day goddesses, in hand-made empire waist gowns that swept the ground as they marched down Sunset Blvd. en masse, often breast-feeding along the way.
I was honored to have some former Source family members show up at my birthday gathering last month. They came with Jodi Wille, who runs the awesome Process books, which published a book about The Source family this year. I highly recommend it as a mind-expanding Christmas gift! Buy it here.

Celebrity cashmere alert!

Apparently it's not enough for a garment just to be cashmere any more. These days, it has to be celebrity-endorsed cashmere before we allow it to brush against our bodies.
Case in point—I was forwarded an email about the Raw 7 sample sale taking place December 7 and 14 in Downtown LA. The headline read: "CELEB-WORTHY CASHMERE AT ROCK BOTTOM PRICES".
Reading on, I learned that Kanye West, Uma Thurman, David and Victoria Beckham, Paris Hilton and Carlos Santana (Carlos Santana?!) have deemed Raw 7 cashmere goods good enough to touch their celebrity skin. "This is a rare opportunity for the general public to purchase Raw 7's edgy cashmere styles," read the press release. As a humble member of the general public, I guess I should feel honored.
One thing I've learned over the years as a style writer is that "celebrity endorsed" can mean many things. It can mean what you think it means, that the celebrity loves and can't get enough of a certain product. Or it can mean that the company has a good publicist, who purchased a booth at one of the better pre-Emmy/pre-Oscar gifting suites, where celebrities, or their publicists/assistants, show up to pick up free stuff. Sometimes the celebrity will agree to pose with the free stuff in front of a photographer and bingo - you get your "celebrity endorsement". Whether or not the item then tumbles into the recesses of that celebrities' closet for the rest of time is irrelevent.
When purchasing cashmere, I'd prefer the endorsement of a celebrity with really sensitive skin. Uma Thurman, fresh after being diagnosed with psoriasis would work. Or Brad Pitt, shortly after filming in a very cold country. Or even better, baby Shiloh.
The Raw 7 sample sale takes place tomorrow December 7 and next Thursday, December 13 in their downtown showroom from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at 900 S. Main Street (Penthouse), Los Angeles, CA 90015. It is the 2nd floor of the Union Bank building. Everything is marked down up to 50 percent below wholesale. Cash and credit cards accepted. Cashmere Hoodies originally sold for $340 are being marked down to $75. And graphic T-shirts that were originally priced at $88 will be $15.

Rachel Pally sample sale

Sample sales go on all this time, but Rachel Pally's is one you should not miss. Her soft, flattering jersey-knit dresses, skirts and tops are feminine yet practical, allowing your body to breathe beneath the gentle fabric. I own a couple of her dresses, including a stunning teal halterneck number that somehow makes my shoulders look toned and sexy. Pally is also one of the few name designers who considers goddesses of all shapes and sizes—her stylish plus-size collection was recently featured on Oprah.

Did I mention she's also one of the smartest gals I know? A Berkeley grad, Pally reads obsessively, is an architecture buff and has, through sheer talent, hard work and personality, single-handedly built her thriving jersey knit empire.

The sale features new merchandise plus items from her previous collections, all at 50-90% off. It starts today (10a.m. to 6 p.m.) and runs through Sunday at 2001 S. Santa Fe Avenue, Suite F, Los Angeles, CA 90021, on the corner of  Santa Fe and 15th. Call 818-512-9472 or 818-512-9575 for more information, or email info@rachelpally.com.

Phyllis Diller, meet the hipsters

Paper, the New York style magazine, is taking up residence in Los Angeles for its annual five-day cultural marathon this week. And this time around they are looking to the past for inspiration, with co-editor and founder Kim Hastreiter (the subject of a lengthy New Yorker profile not so long ago) bringing veteran comedienne Phyllis Diller into the fray.
Diller will show a number of her own paintings at Paper's "Cultural Storefront", a Barbara Bestor-designed gallery space on 233 S. La Brea Ave, on Wednesday November 7 from 5p.m. to 8p.m. The show will also feature polaroids taken by local eccentric Henny Garfunkel. Both Diller and Garfunkel will be on site.
Other Paper events in L.A. this week include a Michael Jackson dance off co-hosted by Parisian ultra-boutique Collette, with dance floor tuition given by fashion designer Jeremy Scott. This is not a joke. And for the marginally less energetic, there's a backyard party at the Venice atelier of furniture and ceramics designer Elizabeth Paige Smith. Unlike the Phyllis Diller art show, neither of the latter two events are open to the public. So if you have strings, we suggest you pull them.

Paulie Go Bye-bye! The Winning Kill.

Herewith, the winning post from Cristina and Julie, who wowed The Stylephile with their parting image of Paulie's white shoes. Grab some gabbagool and read on:
Walnuts Must Dye! We know Paulie is obsessed with his own aging and mortality. That's why he originally declined Tony's offer to "skipper" the big job in the final episode: He said there was a curse and that everyone who moved up died. So Paulie continues to obsess about aging, death, dying ... and that cat at the Bing seems to know something he doesn't. He comes up with the idea of recapturing his younger days: by turning back the clock on his signature skunk patches. That's right, Walnuts is getting a dye job! Or, should we say, die job... At the beauty salon, the hairdresser who’s applying Miss Clairol to Paulie’s pompadour is also gossiping with her clientele of (primarily) old ladies. Distracted, she gets a squirt of "Think Mink" in his eye. Eye stinging, Paulie leaps from his chair ("Maddon!") and stumbles toward the sink. He trips on a purse that's resting at the feet of one of the old ladies. We see Paulie do a "Million Dollar Baby" fall into the row of hairdryers. And the last shot is of an overturned bottle of dye staining his formerly immaculate, painstakingly polished white slip-on shoes.

Angelina shows off her Tahari goods while at CannesHate or love it, L.A.’s significance to the fashion world is undeniable. Clearly, Elie Tahari agrees, as he’s just opened a new boutique at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. The veteran designer explains, "There is a laid back sensibility in L.A. that translates to the way people dress. Celebrities drive a lot of trends, and L.A. is the center of celebrity life. In turn, it has become one of the most influential cities for fashion." Tahari’s sentiment is spot on, considering that Angelina Jolie just made headlines at Cannes, while sporting his designs. The new boutique will offer the entire women’s collection, accessories and even some exclusive items, only available in L.A., mais oui. $200-$1,400, Tahari, Saks Fifth Avenue, 9600 Wilshire Blvd., 4th Fl., (310) 275-4211

Brad Pitt Comes Clean

Was Brad Pitt a Dirty Boy?A friend noted to me that Brad Pitt seems to be emulating a certain debonair idol of bygone years while at Cannes. Pitt, with his side part and classic tux from Tom Ford, could easily sub in for Gregory Peck or Cary Grant. Was it Angelina who made him clean up his act? Hell, no. Fashion Week Daily reported that maestro Tom Ford is the svengali behind Pitt's suave new look. "Brad always looked too scruffy,” Ford reportedly said. “I wanted him to look chic, like a true movie star. Plus, he's not a bad man to clean up.” Ahem, George Clooney might want his look back. Do you dig the new Brad or prefer the scruffier version? Let us know at the Stylephile!

Well, today is a landmark for product junkies out there, as Beauty.com is offering 20%-off orders during their 24-hour Friends and Family Sale on May 23. Win My Chanel Gift Bag

Win My Chanel Gift Bag The Santa Monica airport was never as chic as this past Friday night, when Karl Lagerfeld jetted in — literally — with models to present his Cruise presentation. A few choice runway looks will be featured on the Stylephile. In the meantime, here’s a quick recap of famous faces in the front row: The Olsen twins sat and evaluated each look with funereal stoicism. (Anna Wintour and WASPS nationwide would be proud of their refusal to show any emotion — not even a twitch or smirk.) The ever feline Victoria Beckham, too, watched each outfit like a cheetah eyes a limping gazelle, as if thinking, "You are weak. I am Posh. I will have you." Lindsay Lohan looked vaguely annoyed — or maybe it was accessory envy — as the models pranced by wearing all variations on the hippie headband. (She was spotted smiling after the show, wearing a Chanel head scarf. Maybe she mugged a model backstage?) But most importantly, I have a gift bag from the show containing a darling bottle of Chanel No. 5 (3.4 oz; $90) and a Chanel parking pass (blue logo; priceless) to give away to one reader of the Stylephile. Here’s the question: what’s your secret to staying fresh on a long flight? A certain moisturizer? A bottle of Moet? Be specific about your regimen and you could be head-to-toe in eau de Chanel. -- Monica Corcoran

Sale: For Dad's Day

Something new for Dad's DayHis eyes get all squinty when he listens to Coltrane. You once caught him swiveling his man hips to Sinatra. Right now, this nifty USB turntable is on sale at Fred Flare for $150 (regularly $200) and makes the perfect gift for any aged man who appreciates his old school collection of vinyl and might just want to bebop into the next century—the turntable will record any record to a CD or MP3 player too. (It also converts tapes and 8-tracks.) This year, reward your Dad (or the man who sired your kids) on Father’s Day for his love of Cole Porter and let him delude himself that Deep Purple is still popular.

Shop at MOCA on Melrose Place to benefit the museumLocal art institutions in L.A. are in perpetual need of funding.Unfortunately, most of us aren’t in positions to donate buildings or wings. Still, on May 22 from 6:30 p.m.to 8:30 p.m., we can support the arts at MOCA on Melrose Place. As further proof that contemporary fashion is a close relative of contemporary art (sort of like that crazy, cool aunt), shops like Bird, Carolina Herrera, Colette, Diane von Furstenberg, Dolce Vita, Joann Smyth Jewelry, John Frieda Salon, Lambertson Truex, Marc Jacobs, Marni, Me&Ro, Mulberry (bag pictured), Oscar de la Renta, and Temperley London will stay open late and donate 10% of this evening’s sales (and sales for the next three days — if patrons mention the MOca connection) to the museum.Shoppers will enjoy champagne, hors d’oeuvres and, best of all, complimentary valet. 10% of sales to MOCA, RSVP: projectscouncil@moca.org

The Wylde One

The Wylde One Designer Paula Thomas is a warm host with a statuesque laugh—the type of woman who hugs you hard and tells fantastic stories. Last week, the former model celebrated the release of the book "Death Valley" (an artistic look at her latest Thomas Wylde collection) with a lively dinner co-hosted by Flaunt magazine in the penthouse at the Chateau Marmont. Guests like Courteney Cox and David Arquette joined Vincent Gallo and Kelly Lynch at what appeared to be a more madcap than the usual fashion fete of ladies who lunch. At my table, model Michele Hicks and I discussed the merits of buying trendy looks at Forever 21. Still, Hicks—along with Minnie Driver and Marley Shelton—opted to wear black cocktail dresses (think wedding cakes in black) from Thomas Wylde. Each guest left with a sumptuous cashmere-silk blend blanket emblazoned with a skull. One guest even tried to make her own quilt, apparently. The producer Mark Canton told me that a woman had attempted to grab his gift blanket. Thankfully, they didn’t have to tussle, as she sacrificed her purloined surplus. Check out the bewitching Thomas Wylde collection at Maxfield in Los Angeles or go to her Web site to find other local shops that carry her line.

Recently Dumped?

The perfect gift for the broken-heartedDon’t fret, little wren. When life hands you rotten eggs, throw them out the window and buy a fresh dozen. In other words, it’s time to devote those newfound evenings alone to learning how to cook. And this nifty little mushroom timer from FredFlare.com ($12) makes the perfect companion in the kitchen. I suggest that you perfect your skills at making a primavera frittata and invite a few friends over for a mimosa-soaked Sunday brunch. Oh and for anyone who knows someone who just had her heart dropkicked, this culinary accessory makes for a great gift.

Come Sale Away

Get this chic bathing suit now on saleLike fish, the biggest sale is often the one that got away. No more. Every week, I will find the best bargain on the web and serve it up to you. This time around, I fancy this Melissa Odabash floral bandeau bathing suit with a Julien Macdonald floral print. Best of all, it has been reduced to $101.20 from $253 on netaporter.com. It reminds me of London, circa 1967. Tally-ho! Got a great sale suggestion? Help a sister out and post it on TheStylephile.com.

Are You Invited?

Are You Invited? The image of Karl Lagerfeld filling his plate at a buffet on the Lido deck is unthinkable. Still, the Kaiser of cool — and designer at Chanel — will debut his cruise line here in Los Angeles this Friday night at the Barker Hangar at Santa Monica airport. Scuttlebutt has it that about 300 or so celebs, press people, and assorted and sundry VIPs are invited to this runway show and after-party. Rumor also has it that about 300 or so people who weren’t invited are on the social warpath. I’ll be there and I promise to report back on all the delicious front row fun. I’ll even raffle off my gift bag next week. – Monica Corcoran

Show Horn

Stuart Weitzman Fall 07 Trunk Shows in NYC and LAIt seems a bit contradictory that the fashion world’s beauty standard demands giraffe height, but high-end shoes in corresponding large sizes are scarce. We can’t win: Large and small shoes are nowhere to be found, and common sizes like seven and eight disappear off the shelves before we can say, "heel!" Luckily, tiny, long and average tootsies alike will find beautiful homes at Stuart Weitzman’s upcoming Fall 07 Trunk shows in NYC and LA. At the Madison Avenue store on May 15-18 and at the Rodeo Drive boutique on May 21-23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., shoppers can get first dibs on the new fall collection in sizes including 6-12 AAAA, 5-12 AA, 4-12 B and 5-11 C. Then on May 31, select spring 07 pieces will go on sale. So, you can put your best foot forward, no matter what the size. $200-$600, NYC: Stuart Weitzman, 625 Madison Ave., (212) 750-2555, LA: Stuart Weitzman, 437 N. Rodeo Dr., (310) 860-9600

Lily of La Brea

Lily Savitch 50%-off saleLA weather is confusing. One minute you’re perspiring (heavily) between glasses of wine at Dominick’s courtyard and, the next thing you know, the Marine Layer sends shivers down your spine. Maybe we should all follow the sage packing advice we dispense to visitors: it’s all about layers. Luckily, Lily Savitch is offering 50%-off layerable duds from sweaters to tees to frocks (and even some shoes, marked down an extra 25%). Lines on sale include Cacharel, Chaiken, Woo, Burning Torch, Sweetees, Matt Bernson, Pancake Dinner and Marcello Toshi. Flavin of the Month

The Dan Flavin show opens at LACMAAnyone who believes that L.A. is culturally bereft obviously missed LACMA’s Dan Flavin opening on Wednesday night. A people watcher’s dream, eclectic guests—decked out in everything from Prada to Vivienne Tam—strolled through the galleries, shrouded in shifting colored light. A festive crowd sipped cocktails and noshed on vegetable empanadas in the courtyard. Curated by new buzzed-about LACMA Director Michael Govan, the comprehensive exhibition showcases a range of work—from the 1960’s on—by Flavin, who is often discussed in the company of Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt and Carl Andre. Now, the show is officially open to the public, so feel free to soak up some of that rich L.A. culture. Meanwhile, take a gander at history in the making. The new LACMA building is in a state of mid-construction, but the scope is still quite impressive. $9, LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., (323) 857-6000, lacma.org

Best Man

Byron Williams and Lindsay LohanWhen I got married last year, I made the grave error of downing three—okay, maybe five—glasses of Champagne on the night before my wedding. Guess who awoke with splotchy skin, dark circles, and a barn-size headache? Had it not been for the extraordinary L.A. hair stylist and make up artist Byron Williams, my husband might have had second thoughts on the altar. Byron, who just opened his new salon in Beverly Hills, spackled my face, concealed those carry-on bags beneath my eyes, and styled my hair in cascading ringlets that looked great throughout the ceremony and reception. Last week, Byron christened his chic new salon—called Byron Williams Studio—with a sexy party (co-hosted by Rachel Zoe) that drew well coiffed girls like Lindsay Lohan and Mischa Barton. Yes, there was lots of Champagne too. See Byron for a special occasion and get hair and make up done ($270) or visit him for a brilliant hair cut ($180); ask for Dawn Tracey for impeccable highlights ($200 and up). Trust me. You’ll become a Byron addict too. Byron Williams Studio, 9294 Civic Center Drive, Beverly Hills; 310-276-4470. www.bybyron.com.

Dance All Night

Forty Deuce’s Burlesque School pre-launches with a one night classLong before Jessica Simpson popped out of a cake on Nick Lachey’s birthday, put on her very own burlesque show and gave him a $50,000 watch, A-listers frequented Ivan Kane’s Forty Deuce. Burlesque is clearly hot—just ask Dita. In fact, a Forty Deuce location in New York is opening later this year. At the pre-launch of Forty Deuce’s Burlesque School on Thursday, May 17, fifteen lucky ladies can sign up for a two-hour striptease dancing lesson with veteran Champagne Suzy and Forty Deuce headliner Carolina. Considering the elite nature of the class, the $25 fee (which includes a gift bag, natch) is inexpensive, and also probably a one-time offer. Reserve a spot quickly and learn some sexy moves. A $50,000 watch is probably not included. $25, Ivan Kane’s Forty Deuce, 5574 Melrose Ave., (323) 465-4242

Mother Love

Kinara offers their Mother’s Day Makeover PackageBased on our individual issues, I think it’s fair to say that there are many types of mothers. Some are frumpy, some are vain, some bake cookies, some run companies, some are accepting, some are critical and one is, well, Angelina. Still, Kinara’s Mother’s Day Makeover Package seems like it would suit almost anyone. A consultation with skincare expert (and Kinara co-owner) Olga Lorencin-Northup determines the most beneficial course and is followed by spa treatment like an Anti-Aging Facial, Lomi Lomi Hot Stone Therapy, Scalp Massage or Lashes by Kinara. Around $300 worth of relevant skincare products will be included, as well. Book lunch in the café and spend some quality time. Having hosted a panel on anti-aging and health last week with Lorencin-Northup, Chinese Medicine expert Dr. Dao and plastic surgeon Andrew T. Cohen, M.D. in the garden café, Kinara is placing special emphasis on maintaining healthy, younger looking skin through diet, facial treatments, acupuncture and even non-invasive plastic surgery. So, guests are bound to leave feeling beautiful, relaxed and like they got a deal, which should satisfy even the most difficult mothers: our own. $300 ($600 value), Kinara Spa, 656 N. Win My Dior Bag

Win My Dior BagLadies, listen closely. Do you hear the high-pitched cackle of designers laughing, as they feast on gold-gilded crab cakes and diamond-encrusted Dover sole? Here’s the joke: The fact that women are spending nearly $1,000 for a plastic Chanel tote or $4,310 for the new Fendi Spy satchel. Are we insane? Apparently so, since there are hardly any designer purses selling for less than a thou these days. The new organic canvas shopper from Stella McCartney is priced at $495 and that’s, in essence, a grocery bag. Even a nylon Prada fanny pack sells for $420! In revolt, I will pass along my vintage petite Dior saddle bag—festooned with navy logos—to whomever posts the best way to "look" busy at work. Go to the Stylephile and tell us how to procrastinate AND get a raise! I will pick a winner by tomorrow at noon. -- Monica Corcoran

Saturday Night Fever

On Saturday night, charity events Hullabaloo and 2007 Scholarship Benefit Show happened across townIt may not be Christmas, but the spirit of giving pervaded in LA on Saturday night. At Hullabaloo, the Silverlake Conservatory of Music fundraiser created by Red Hot Chili Pepper's beloved bassist Flea and the school's dean Keith Barry, audience members (including Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Val Kilmer) came out to support kids who rock. At a raucous live auction to benefit the scholarship program for low-income students, among other items, a Chili Pepper-signed electric guitar went for $3,000 and a set of eight Damien Hirst prints went for a whopping $150,000. In the true spirit of folk hullabaloos, Eddie Vedder regaled the audience with a new anti-war tune. He brought down the house, teaming up with Flea to cover Neil Young and then with the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones to cover the Who. Later, MC Woody Harrelson introduced the Chili Peppers, who amped the crowd with "oldies" like "Catholic School Girls Rule."
Meanwhile at the Beverly Hilton, OTIS College of Art and Design (west coast Parsons) hosted their 2007 Scholarship Benefit and Fashion Show. During cocktail hour, guests participated in a silent auction of student-designed (fashion mentored) pieces from collections like Betsey Johnson and Billabong swimwear, Calvin Klein, Armani Exchange and Behnaz Sarafpour designer sportswear, Bob Mackie eveningwear, and BCBG and Juicy Couture sportswear. The highest bid of the night was $2,400 from Arlene Montesano (wife of Gene Montesano of Lucky Brands) for a gown by designer Susan Halloran for Behnaz Sarafpour. otis.com, silverlakemusicconservatory.com

Get Holly's Sleep Mask

Get Holly's sleep maskThe iconic image of Audrey Hepburn (as Holly Golightly) with her nose pressed up against the glass of Tiffany’s never wowed me. I have always preferred the vision of Holly with a hellacious hangover, cursing the "mean reds" or demons of depression. Want the look without all the existential angst? Getting The Boots

British beauty line Boots arrives in the U.S.Although the British Invasion was generally considered a good thing, I’m on the fence about certain other British exports, like Marmite and the Beckhams. England won’t take Snoop, but we’re supposed to absorb Posh Spice? Fortunately, beloved British pharmacy and Beauty line, Boots, has also just arrived in the U.S.  On Tuesday evening, a Sunset Tower Hotel blue carpet bash in the Terrace Room announced the arrival of the Boots collection at Target. Under American and British flags, Paris Hilton, Sophia Bush, Ali Larter, Christina Milian and Emmy Rossum tippled Bass Ale (black and tan, anyone?) to Johnny Walker Black. The starlets also sampled products from all different Boots lines. Boots’ Target collection includes everything from Mediterranean Body Butter to No7 Super Slim Anti-Cellulite Balm and Restore & Renew Beauty Serum. Give us back Madonna (minus the accent), and maybe we've got a fair trade. $7.99-$17.99, Target

Read Their Minds and Win

Read their crazy minds and win Valentino sunglasses

Imitation may be the best form of flattery, but Nicole Richie needs a new role model. What is Paris thinking right now? Maybe: “I hope the roofie I slipped Nicole doesn’t wear off until we get off this red carpet.” Or: “Wait until I get my hands on that little Abigail Breslin. She’s next!” And what of Nicole Richie, who, in my mind, always had more character and moxie than her TV co-star? Could it be that Paris stuck a straw in Nicole’s skull and sucked away at her cranium like it was a Capri Sun? No doubt, it’s a sad day for doppelgangers everywhere. Come up with a clever caption for this picture and post it at the Stylephile and you could win a pair of oversized Valentino sunglasses, edged with pearls. Tomorrow at 3:00, I will announce a winner. -- Monica Corcoran

Kiss the Sky

Kiss the Sky Last week, Los Angeles dermatologist Dr. Jessica Wu and Maria Bello hosted a cocktail party to lend support to a great and important cause. The event benefited “Half the Sky,” an organization that was started by a scriptwriter in 1997 and helps orphaned children in China. (The majority of infants who are abandoned in China are girls, alas, but you can sponsor a child for just $25 per month for one year—that’s a mere sacrifice of about five lattes or two movie tickets.) FYI: Dr. Wu happens to be my skin doctor and I wouldn’t entrust my freckled visage to anyone else. Among actresses and ladies about town, she’s known for her light touch and none of her clients ever look pulled, pinched or genetically altered. To learn more about the cause, go to www.halfthesky.org. To see Dr. Wu for a skin consultation or try her excellent skin care products that contain Chinese botanicals, visit her official site-- Monica Corcoran

Girlz in the Hood

Fill the spring cleaning void with Mike & Chris hoodiesMay's arrival throws many of us into spring cleaning mode. We donate old clothes, sort cluttered shelves and even kick a few lame friends to the curb--halleluiah. After the process is through though, we are left with some pretty wide gaps. This weekend, you can fill the void with fabulous new items from the Mike & Chris sample sale. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, all the designers’ beloved hoodies, dresses, tops and jackets (of which one can never have enough—so useful and cute!) will be on sale for up to 70%-off. If you’re lucky, you’ll snag a leather bag too. My sage advice: get there early. The space is small, the mirrors are few and the garments are in demand. As for new friends to replace the old, in that department, you’re pretty much on your own. M&C: 70%-off, 834 S. Broadway, 2nd fl

Win these Kasil jeans!

Win these Kasil jeans!Jeans are not a girl's best friend. They are as mercilessly unforgiving as a scale in a doctor's office. When I slip into a pair — or wrestle my way in, depending on my binge schedule — I can instantly gauge my weight gain or loss. The first evil omen has me jigging back and forth like a coked up River Dancer to eke the resistant denim past my thighs. Has anyone else fallen down during this demoralizing process? In a tiny dressing room at Fred Segal? (All I heard was muffled laughter and the click-clack of Prada pumps, as my salesgirl fled the scene to unleash her size 0 cackles.) Next, there’s that moment when the zipper says, "Better call MacGyver, toots" and refuses to close. But do I turn back and peel them off? Hell, no. Do you have a trick for putting on tight jeans? (A friend fasts the day before she goes to try on denim.) Post your tip on TheStylephile.com and you could win a pair of these chic Kasil jeans ($213: kasiljean.com). The style, Sylvia, features a special secret pocket for your credit card and most importantly, a reverse angled hem. I will pick the best post by noon on Friday and determine a lucky winner. Oh and be sure to also check out the cool Q&A with Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal on the site to learn about her favorite spot in lower Manhattan. - Monica Corcoran

A Deep Trench

The Lake and Stars trunk show at Henri BendelMost women don’t actually show up at their lovers’ doors in only trench coats and lingerie. That’s the sort of a male fantasy women cackle about over cocktails. We file it alongside teenage girls wearing teddies to sleepover parties. Still, fresh line The Lake and Stars—whose inaugural collection launched at last Fashion Week—have brought trenches and lingerie together seamlessly. The designers will be revealing Lovebirds and Modesty, their newest collections of edgy, sexy, light lingerie, and taking custom orders for Fall 07 trenches at their Henri Bendel Trunk Show today (4/26) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. A cocktail party (and free gifts with purchases) kicks in at 5 p.m. Maybe wearing a trench coat and lingerie isn’t so ridiculous after all, especially with clothes in between. $25 and up, Henri Bendel, 712 Fifth Ave., 3rd fl., (212) 247-1100

Cameron Diaz seems to be sporting the Cal-Brazilian stylesHavianas and Brazilian bikini waxes are summer standards on both U.S. coasts. For this summer, more facets of Brazilian culture have arrived for our consumption—no, sadly, not their beautiful men. New Leblon cachaca (Brazilian rum) has just hit the scene, making Caipirinhas (Brazilian national drink) the hot cocktail at hangouts from L.A.’s Table 8 to NYC’s Cellar Bar. Leblon’s website also offers fun recipes to serve at home, including the Caipirinha of the Month: Zocalo’s Blackberry Agave. Need a bit of exercise after all those cocktails? Now that you’ve whipped that body into shape, how about sliding into a new Le Doux bikini? Cameron Diaz seems to be sporting the Cal-Brazilian styles on the beach, which can be super sweet (just watch for an occasional dose of cheesy). This summer's "it" girl is definitely from Ipanema. Leblon: $28.99, Vinyasa: $16, Leblon: bevmo.com, Le Doux: $125-$175, Vinyasa: 8250 W. Third St., #205, (323) 782-0741, Le Doux: ledouxswimwear.com

A Dog's World

Crystal Canine showcased crystal-laden dog accessories. We get it: Toy dogs are a girl’s greatest accessory. Not to be a hater, but once pooches start sporting Pucci, we all need to take a moment to re-evaluate. Still, it’s undeniably impressive to get dogs to walk a runway (just ask Miss J.), which is exactly what they did at "Crystal Canine" this Monday evening. LA Dogworks (doggie spa) and Swarovski Elements teamed up with doggie couture designers to organize this crystal-laden accessory show, which featured everything from wedding attire to jeans. Celebrities from Diem Brown of Real World/Road Rules Challenge fame, designer Yana K. and Lisa Edelstein of  House walked pups down the runway. From the silent auction post-show, 5% of sales went to Best Friends Animal Society. Although the couture pieces are all gone, accessories of all kinds are still available at the LA Dogworks store. So your canine friend can peruse the shop and pick out anything its little heart desires. Ever feel a little like a sugar daddy? $8 and up, LA Dogworks, 1014 N. Highland Ave., (323) 461-5151

Win Nars & MAC

Win Nars and MAC Make-Up!Blog. To me, the word most resembles the sound someone makes to indicate that she desperately needs the Heimlich maneuver. It also reminds me of elderly European men on street corners, who emit guttural explosions ("Blech!" "Blugh!" "Blog!") to pass the long afternoons. Still, I rather like it since it well represents the way we spit out info. Apparently, the word affronts Anna Wintour enough that she has appealed to her Vogue staff to come up with a chicer mot—as was reported by Page Six. Perhaps the winner at Vogue will receive a free pass to eat a Kit-Kat without being fired. Want to weigh in? Visit TheStylephile.com and post your best idea for a substitute word for blog in the comments section beneath this post. The winner will receive a gift bag filled with make-up (MAC, Nars) and other great goodies hand-picked from my beauty closet. — Monica Corcoran

Genetic Code

Lindsay LohanThe denim market is beyond saturated. Wading through all the gimmicky brands is an endless and demoralizing task. But that didn’t stop Genetic Denim co-owner Ali Fatourechi, who set out in a U-Haul to solve the denim dilemma. Fatourechi traveled to hundreds of college campuses, hosting denim sample sales (and he’s got the wild stories to prove it). He noted which cuts were most flattering and washes most popular, and realized quickly that confidence made all the difference in girls’ appearances. So with club owner Scott Sartiano and denim veteran Shaun Hurley, Fatourechi created (and then recently recreated) Genetic Denim. The collection offers the Recessive line for mini ladies, Dominant jeans for those with curves and no crazy low waistbands at all. (A pair of baggie Dominant jeans are hot on a skinny body as well). Genetic's denim Leggings are the newest rage, but look out for Sailor Pants and dramatic 24-inch wide-leg Twisted Seam jeans next. Plus, the Cobalt wash is a nod to worn out Levi's, and a must-have. Perhaps the line’s biggest statement, though, is their rejection of celebrity gifting. Because they refuse to give in to the excessive trend, A-listers like Sarah Jessica Parker and J-Lo have been heading to Curve and actually (gasp) paying money for pairs. Now that is a miracle of Genetics. $160-$240, Ron Herman: 8100 Melrose Ave., (323) 651-4129, Curve: 154 N. Robertson Blvd., (310) 360-8008, Photo credit: Retna.

Pretty In Pink

Pink beauty developments from events to productsMakeup may be peachy keen for summer, but everything is coming up bubblegum pink in the beauty world. This Friday (4/20) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Dermalogica is wisely hosting an event to support breast cancer organization Pink-Link, instead of limiting charity work for the cause to October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month). Their targeted MicroZone Treatment for blemishes and dehydration is only $25, and is actually free with purchases over $100. 100% of proceeds for the treatment will go to the pinker than thou organization. This summer, a portion of sales from pink-bottled PureologyVolume sets and SuperStraight Smoothing Systems will benefit the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) as well. The Pureology line was originally developed to be carcinogen free, DEA/MEA free, sulfate free and even salt free for a friend with ovarian cancer. As for FHI Heat’s new cotton candy-colored Nano Salon Pro 2000 Blow Dryer, the cause is even closer to home: It’s all about you. The dryer is ergonomically designed to reduce arm stress. Plus, the pink beast employs Nano technology to remove bacteria, toxins and static from the hair, allows for 1500 hours of use (almost double the norm) and emits a gentle infared heat and low electro magnetic field to prevent damage. It's a pink world this summer. Pink-Link: $25 MicroZone Treatment, Pureology Sets: $50, FHI: $270, Pink-Link: Dermalogica on Montana, 1022 Montana Ave., (310) 260-8682, Pureology: pureology.com, FHI: fhiheat.com

A Taxing Week

Antidotes to the tax season bluesIt is a universal truth that tax season adds extra stress. Instead of brooding at home post-trauma—a truly useless endeavor—might as well make the best of a bad situation. Argyle Salon & Spa store’s Tax Relief Promotion is good through today (4/17), so the shop will pay any and all sales tax on your purchases. That includes Mother’s Day gift certificates. Since the most important thing is your sanity, head to the spa at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills for an exclusive Hydrating Cashmere Wrap, performed on several hush-hush celebrities pre-Oscars. Surely, money is no object when it comes to peace of mind. Then rid yourself of any remaining aggression at trainer Andy Petranek’s new Fight Club class on Wednesday nights. Crossfit —used to train the cast of 300 — is combined with martial arts. Tax season may get you down, but it can’t keep you there. Argyle: Comped Sales Tax, Cashmere Wrap: $250, Fight Club: $297 for 3 months and up, Argyle: argylela.com, Four Seasons, 300 S. Doheny Dr., (310) 273-2222, Petranek Fitness, 1453 14th St., (310) 260-9550, $25 per class (free introductory session recommended)

Lofty Goals

Biscuit Company Loft ToursDowntown loft dwellers are a whole new category of Angeleno. Despite the lack of regular ammenities like supermarkets, the area's open floor plan apartments have attracted pioneering hipsters. Local artists, who have long inhabited Downtown studios and warehouse spaces, could be resentful of the new influx (and price hike). Still, on Thursday evening, many were represented in curator Seth Carmichael’s contemporary exhibition in honor of new Biscuit Company Lofts. Carmichael converted the Supreme Penthouse into a gallery space, showcasing up-and-comers and established cool kids like Shepard Fairey. Who knew stickers were so lucrative? For the next two weeks, Biscuit Company is offering design tours of three special spaces to benefit GenArt, including Kenneth Brown for LA Mart Design Center, Flow By Aleks Istanbullu Architects and the Menzie Downtown Loft. Afterward visitors can head to nearby Blue Velvet, where specialty spring cocktails like the Fuji-Ricky (with Absolut Pear and muddles Fuji apples and pears) and New American snacks like Monte Cristo sandwiches will be served at the newly opened poolside lounge. All the cool Downtown kids are doing it. Tours: $25, Biscuit Company Lofts, 1855 Industrial St., (323) 993-7211; Blue Velvet, 750 S. Garland Ave, (213) 239-0061

Ohm, If You Want To

Exhale’s complimentary yoga eveningDespite the countless world music, hip hop and rock yoga classes that lately attract hordes around L.A., purists believe that music negates the centered purpose of the practice. Still, fans (like this one) think tunes ease the dullness of an hour and a half of deep stretching. Breathe easy at Exhale this evening (4/12) from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., where a complimentary ocean view Vinyasa Flow class will be accompanied by live music. Notoriously toned Jessica Biel attends Exhale’s yoga classes, as does Jeremy Piven and The Pussy Cat Dolls, and you know they can go wherever they please. Afterward grab hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and mini-treatments from acupuncture to massage to facials on the studio’s rooftop. Plus, find out more about hot fitness fad Core Fusion. Now that’s music to anyone’s ears. Complimentary, Exhale Santa Monica, 1422 Second St., RSVP: (323) 334-7239

Model Citizen

Supermodels leave Hollywood alone and attack different professionsAlthough the majority of America’s Next Top Model contestants would be voted "Most Likely to Benefit From Psychiatric Care," the pretty posers generally hope to skip Belview and head straight for Hollywood. Models have a long history of trying to break into film, often with catastrophic results. Still, some ex-supermodels are going different routes: Paulina Porizkova just published her first novel A Model Summer, all about—you guessed it—a young model. But at least she’s trying to write what she knows. Meanwhile Gail Elliot’s clothing line Little Joe is flourishing, thanks to her knowledge of fashion from years in the industry. Her most recent successes include sweet spring slip sundresses and another store opening in Australia. Sounds like a model summer for Gail Elliot too. Fantasy Island

Designer Bodo Sperlein launches his new Lladro home line at TartThough The Surreal Life might have viewers believing otherwise, fantasy—not reality—is the cornerstone of surrealism: Think Salvador Dalí, not Brigitte Nielson. And fantasy is clearly hot, as evidenced by zeitgeist heavies like Pan’s Labyrinth, childish patent leather Mary Janes and baby doll frocks á la Alice In Wonderland and now designer Bodo Sperlein’s new Lladró Re-Cyclos Magical home collection. At Tart on Melrose this Thursday evening, Sperlein and guests toasted the west coast launch of the line, which separates itself from Lladró’s relatively conservative reputation. Surrealist undertones—a nod to the company’s Spanish heritage—are clear in highlights like the Chandelier Niagara, which dangles a cluster of uniquely engraved fairies that evoke swarming butterflies. Other standouts include black ram and horse head bottle stoppers and the Canvas Vase Flowers Tapestry, from which a delicate flowerbed appears to sprout. Sperlein’s creations are also featured alongside Viktor & Rolf’s top hat printed pieces in "Surreal Things," a show that opened last week at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum. This is no time to get real. $95-$90,000, TableArt Inc./Tart, 7977 Melrose Ave., (323) 653-8278

Nor Easter

Easter celebration alternatives to the normSome holiday traditions are universal: turkey on Thanksgiving, fireworks on July 4, and apparently eating eggs benedict at Easter Brunch. Every "special" menu in town seems to include a variation on the theme.  Luckily there are alternatives to the celebratory norms: Saddle Peak Lodge will offer their "Kick-Ass-Chili" as a spicy Easter treat. Ex-pat New Yorkers may head to P6 in Agoura Hills for a bagels, cream cheese and lox appetizer.  Think Easter is for the dogs? Head to The Haute Dog Easter Parade & Pet Adoption Fair in Belmont Shore and save a dog from being dyed pastel next year.  The Easter Egg Hunt at Descanso Gardens borders on traditional, although the surroundings are extra beautiful and the event is happening on Saturday instead of Sunday.  Oh and their brunch menu (on both weekend days) doesn't include eggs benedict. SPL: $40, P6: Adults, $25, Kids, $12, HDP: $10 entry fee, DG: Egg Hunt, $4, Brunches: Adults, $42, Kids, $15, saddlepeaklodge.com, p6lounge.com, hautedogs.org, descansogardens.com

Couture Grass Stains

South Sydney RabbitohsThe trend in designer uniforms has gone rough and tumble, with Giorgio Armani creating an off-field wardrobe for Aussie rugby team: the South Sydney Rabbitohs. The sleek pinstripe green blazers—replete with a new crest—and Merlot tie combo makes these thick-necked footballers look as innocent as prep school lads. No doubt, the fact that Russell Crowe plays with the league was incentive to make these guys look sharp. Donna Karan, with her DKNY label, wants to get sporty, too. The company will dress Manhattan cyclists who ride for the Signature Cycles team. Hey, Ralph Lauren! How about those Mets?

Nostra-Damus

Jeffrey Sebelia of Project Runway fame shows his fall '07 collection downtownMany a reality show star has murmured "you'll see me again," as he or she stalked off the proverbial island. On Thursday night fashion world devotees and friends took another gander at Project Runway winner Jeffrey Sebelia, as he showcased his fall 07 Cosa Nostra collection. Models stalked down the untraditional square runway at 2121 Lofts downtown in warm autumnal tones like burnt umber, granite and taupe, which softened the look of the designer's occasionally extreme lines. The most successful garments were women's deerskin leather jackets and pants, perhaps because the inherent edge of the material made Sebelia less inclined to force the "rock n' roll" look. While plaids looked more ska than punk, woolen knit blazers, knit baby doll and pintuck dresses, a cotton sleeveless hoodie and of course Sebelia's signature zipper frocks in various colors and fabrications drew applause from pensive onlookers like fellow Project Runway alumna Nick Verreos (literally with chin in hand) and actress Lisa Edelstein of House, M.D. As this line feels like a step-up from its predecessor, seems like we may be seeing Jeffrey Sebelia again. cosanostrainc.com
