Tarina Tarantino Barbie doll launch

It's every little girl's dream to have a Barbie doll that looks just like them. Jewelry designer Tarina Tarantino saw her dream come true last week, with the launch of Mattel's Tarina Tarantino Collector Series Barbie Doll, a princessy dolly in her very own, pink-haired likeness.Fellow fuschia-haired diva Audrey Kitching (online scene queen with armies of teenage followers and former girlfriend of Panic! At the Disco's Brendon Urie) was at the launch party, held at Tarina's store in West Hollywood. Kitching is pictured above, with her Ken, fellow "scene king", author Clint Catalyst. WWE star Maryce was there, styled by fashion designer Jared Gold, and looking just like a chic blonde 1950s Barbie. (Maryce is pictured with Tarina Tarantino)
The Tarina Tarantino Collector Series Barbie Doll is $82, purchase here.

The Great Los Angeles Brainwash
There was a rumor going around the Mr Brainwash private preview in Hollywood last night that the whole thing was, in fact, a hoax."Someone told me this is all a big joke," said my informant in hushed tones. "We're all being filmed, and then in a week they'll reveal that Mr Brainwash isn't who he says he is, and everyone will know just how stupid L.A. is for falling for it."
This was whispered to me as I hovered around a graffiti'd urinal, à la Duchamp, just one of many jarringly literal interpretations on display in the former CBS studio on Sunset Blvd.
Whatever the truth, Mr Brainwash is definitely real, at least: he's Thierry Guetta, a French filmmaker who became so obsessed with the street artists he was filming, he decided to become one himself, wheat-pasting stretches of L.A.'s La Brea corridor with black and white Banksy-style stencils.
And if Guetta is indeed out to
But that's not to say there weren't any original ideas inside this cavern of re-purposed greatness.
His larger installations were, for example, very striking--former editing bays filled with books and taped off, graffiti'd with the words "not finish"; a dog sculpture made from old telephones; a 15 feet high take-out bag, complete with receipt taped to the side; and a 30 foot high robot built entirely from (working) vintage TVs. "Look, that's totally L.A.," said a friend, pointing to a cage filled with film reels and car tires. She was right.
I asked Roger Gastman, publisher of street art magazine "Swindle", whether he thought the Mr Brainwash thing was an elaborate J.T. Leroy-esque hoax. "Um, no, I don't think so," he shrugged. "I mean, he exists. He's outside right now, riding a tricycle with a cast on his leg."
The next morning I asked Shepard Fairey, arguably the best-known graffiti artist in America, his thoughts on the conspiracy theory. "He's not a hoaxer," said Fairey. "He is, however, crazy."
Go see for yourselves.
Mr Brainwash, "Life Is Beautiful" continues through Sunday, June 22. At 6121 W Sunset Blvd @ El Centro, Hollywood, CA, 90028. Click here for opening hours.

Are you a Marchesa bride?
Are you a bare-foot bride, who'll make her vows in a bikini on Bali? Are you a vintage bride, who'll rock her great grandmother's 1920s lace nightdress as she walks down the aisle?
Or maybe your style is a little more glam, a touch more red carpet—in which case you might be a Marchesa bride.
As reported by WWD.com, Georgina Chapman, red carpet dressmaker and recent bride of Harvey Weinstein, is launching a seven-piece bridal collection, with looks in various shades of white, all available off-the-rack.
Chapman, who designed her own wedding dress, looks likely to stick to her trademark Goddess-inspired, draped looks for the capsule collection.
Brides will be able to order from Bergdorf Goodman later this month, and actual stock will arrive in July, with dresses to be priced between $3,500 and $10,000.

Last night at Little Dom's
Living in L.A., you become accustomed to regular celebrity interaction. My friend once asked Vincent Gallo to serve her a hotdog outside Home Depot (she didn't realize who he was, "he was standing by the hotdog stand, he had a beard" she protested). A nameless star of the 1980s once invited me to take magic mushrooms and have a threesome with his wife. (I didn't go there). And a few years ago, I spent my birthday with Def Leppard. All run of the mill, regular La-La land kind of stuff. But last night at Little Dom's restaurant, even jaded Angelenos like myself couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at the random Monday night star-power strolling through the door. Little Dom's recently opened in the Los Feliz neighborhood of L.A., the Eastside outpost of Dominick's restaurant in West Hollywood. It's a cozy little spot, serving upscale Italian fare. Not the kind of place that screams red carpet. So I was only mildly surprised to spot Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, waiting to be seated with some friends. Then in sashayed Kelly Lynch, blonde and eternally beautiful, with her equally long-haired beau Mitch Glazer. "Hmm," I thought. "It's getting hot in here." Then not five minutes later, in walks Christina Ricci. "This is getting ridiculous," I whispered to my friend. "I know," she said nodding over to the corner, where Orlando Bloom was hanging out.
With that much eye-candy, the great food was just a bonus. Long live L.A.

Jimmy Zoo
I arrived at the Jimmy Choo store opening on Rodeo Drive on Friday night only to be greeted by the sight of hundreds of paparazzi and, even worse, a line to get in. The PR woman in charge calmly informed me that fire marshalls were about to close the party down, so they simply couldn't let anybody else in. I pressed my nose up against the window of the store, and tried to soak up the atmosphere. I saw Tamara Mellon (pictured, right, with Rachel Zoe) the British socialite who founded the Jimmy Choo empire. I spotted Lisa Rinna, Debra Messing, Lisa
Kudrow, and an assortment of Choo-heeled Beverly Hills ladies. There was my friend, style writer and consummate fashionista Linlee Allen, sipping from a glass of Veuve. Fashion editor Merle Ginsberg was interviewing the party goers. AndrewAndrew, the creative design duo were there, wearing identical outfits and looking Awesome in Argyle. And there was the beautiful actress Shiva Rose. Sigh. And then Harvey Weinstein showed up.
The movie mogul is financial backer of the newly re-launched Halston label, with Jimmy Choo's Tamara Mellon helming, Versace's former head of couture Marco Zanini designing and stylist Rachel Zoe on board. Weinstein's new wife (they married last month), the very pretty Georgina Chapman, is herself a fashion designer (for Marchesa).
As Harvey Weinstein strolled forth, the seas parted and as you'd expect, he achieved a clean entrance into the party. He may be a large-ish fella (and therefore most definitely a fire hazard), but in Beverly Hills, there's always enough room for Harvey.
(PS: The Stylephile was allowed in a few minutes later. Grrr.)

Disco ball, cracked
New Yorkers, you have until January 28 to check out Helmut Lang's art installation at the "the journal", a gallery in Williamsburg opened by "the journal" magazine.Lang retired from fashion two years ago after his falling out with the Prada Group and no longer has anything to do with the Helmut Lang label.. Since then he has been working on various art-related projects, including his website hl art. Check out his views on the relationship between art and fashion in "the journal".
The installation, called Next Ever After, features a large cracked mirrored ball, which "like Janus, the Roman god, is able to view the past and future simultaneously, reflecting while simultaneously absorbing its surroundings, creating a sensation both voyeuristic and self-aware,” as explained on the press release.

It's alive! The Ann Demeulemeester shop in Seoul
Another reason to love the vertical gardening movement--the new Ann Demeulemeester shop in the Gangham district of Seoul, whose facade is entirely covered in living, breathing green matter. Even one of the indoor stairways is entirely lined with moss. The building is so spectacular, we wonder whether it overshadows the clothes that are on sale inside. The space, a "synthetic organism", took four months to design , and another six to constrcut. Seoul architecture firm Mass Studies headed up the project, led by Minsuk Cho (whose ‘Heyri Dalki Theme Park’ was exhibited at the 2004 Venice Biennale).
Not sure what kind of upkeep the living garden will require, but let's pray for plenty of rain in 2008.

Seen at the Matthew Barney opening

I met Alia Raza, pictured here with her friend Alex, at the Matthew Barney opening at Regen Projects in L.A. I complimented her on her dress which she informed me was made by her friend Magda Berliner, who just happens to be one of L.A.'s most talented fashion designers (find out where to buy her stuff here). Turns out Berliner is providing costumes for a short film that Raza will start shooting in January. It is based on a short story of Miranda July's, and stars Becky Stark of Lavender Diamond, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, fashionista Liz Goldwyn, and OK Go's Damian Kulash.
Fashion designer Jasmin Shokrian, Melissa Coker of Wren and Juan Carlos Obando are also donating and making clothes for the short. all are working under the direction of costume designer Lauren Tafuri. Meeting Raza was one of the highlights of the opening, which was attended by Barney's lady, Björk. A video of Barney's recent performance art piece—you know, the one where the girls pee and the bull tries to mate with a truck—was screened in a back room.

Green beauty emporium opens
When make-up artist Reneta Helfman decided to rid her lifestyle of all chemicals, she set out on a mission to find luxury all-natural beauty products. On her quest, she discovered tons of great lines like Red Flower, Caldera, Stella McCartney and Erbaviva. The problem was in order to collect all these goodies, Helfman had to spend hours traveling around to different stores like Barneys, Sephora and Fred Segal.
One day, while sitting in her car, a light bulb went off. "I thought in this day and age when everything is going green, how could there not be a store for all of these products?" Six months later, Vert was born. A chic beauty boutique on Abbott Kinney in Venice is a breath of fresh air, offering a wide selection of luxury eco-friendly products. Helman says cutting chemicals out of her lifestyle has brought with it many benefits."I feel like a different person. My hair has grown long, my skin is better and my energy levels greatly increased," she said. Celebrities are already taking notice of the new shop and Thursday's opening night soiree drew flawless faces like Molly Sims and Ginnifer Goodwin.

Gary Baseman's vinyl dolly

I just received an email from the artist Gary Baseman telling me that his White HotChaChaCha, an albino three-legged wily imp, has been made into a limited edition vinyl toy. It went on sale today, exclusively on his website. The limited edition pieces (only 300 were made) just went on sale for $110, so if you're interested in getting one you should visit the website now, before they are all gone. Vinyl toy collecting is a big thing these days, apparently...
I have known Gary for a couple of years, and have always enjoyed his talent and his mischievous personality. Did you know that Gary won an Emmy in 2000 for his animated ABC/Disney show, Teacher's Pet?
Here's a photo of him and the lovely young artist Natalia Fabia, who recently had a packed opening at the Corey Helford gallery in Culver City. Among the paintings was a portrait of yours truly, dressed as like a flamenco dancer dragging a suitcase across the African plains.

Judith Thurman's LA dish
My good friend, style writer Steffie Nelson invited me to a conversation with longtime "New Yorker" writer Judith Thurman (pictured) last week...and what a treat it was. Held at the Los Angeles Central Library in Downtown, the conversation was led by KUSC radio host Gail Eichenthal, who probed Thurman on the stories contained in her latest book, "Cleopatra's Nose, 39 Varieties of Desire". Thurman, known for her fashion essays, has profiled many of the world's leading designers and artists, and the book contains her thoughts on Coco Chanel, Rei Kawakubo, Diane Arbus and Elsa Schiaparelli. In one of her stories, about Giorgio Armani, she opens with a personal anecdote, recalling arriving at what she thought was a costume party in a green caterpillar outfit, only to realize everyone else was wearing tuxes and cocktail dresses. "Where was Giorgio Armani when I needed him," she wrote (or something to that effect), in her humorous and artfully-crafted prose.
Thurman told the audience about spending an evening chatting with Jackie Onassis in the sixties, describing her as "the ultimate courtesan". Later, while signing copies of the book, Thurman told Steffie and I that she was knee-deep in a profile of designer Isabelle Toledo (pictured here with her husband Ruben), who was controversially dropped from her head role at Anne Klein just a few weeks ago. We can't wait to read it! Afterward, we popped next door to Cafe Pinot, and spotted Judith again. She sat at a table with friends, including the young model and pizza heiress Caroline D'Amore, whom we mentioned in a post just a few weeks ago.
Small world.

A feast for the senses
Imagine a store that sold home furnishings by Cappellini, flatscreen TVs by Bang & Olufsen and that housed its own art gallery, Virtu. All that's missing is a bowl of Cheetos and a remote, right?
Minus the Cheetos, that vision is now reality, with the opening of a new 6,000 square-foot concept store and showroom on Beverly Blvd in Los Angeles.
Cappellini, the iconic Italian design firm, works with designers and artists from around the world. The showroom features historical pieces such as the Revolving Cabinet by Shiro Kuramata, and the Proust chair by Alessandro Mendini.
The 1,200 square-foot Bang & Olufsen space features a "media room" where you can chill out with the Danish firm's high-end audio-visual gadgets.
And the gallery space, named Virtu, will feature rotating themed art shows, starting with an exhibition of Raphael Mazzucco's huge resin photographs.

Meaning no over-use of pesticides, and adherence to water and soil conservation standards.

Smells like Paris in August
Paris...city of garlic, ancient sewer systems, and sweaty handsome men...mmm.
And from what we hear, seems like Paris Hilton's Moulin Rouge-inspired new fragrance "Can Can" stays true to its funky French roots.
We have yet to sniff it ourselves, but we did find this review that said it smells "hazardous, in as much as the quality of the ingredients used has been cheapened down and the composition seems intent on drilling a hole in your brain if you persist in smelling it from too up close."
Yikes.

Instant body gratification

Want a Brazilian butt lift, or an itsy-bitsy waist, but don't have $15,000 to spare?
Plastic surgeon Dr Robert Rey (aka Dr. 90210) has teamed up with lingerie designer Bruno Schiavi to create a line of body-shaping lingerie that could, if its successful, put him out of business.
The line, being sold here through HSN, is the perfect quick-fix for the holidays, especially if you've gained a few pounds and need to squeeze in to that sexy Cavalli cocktail dress.
Our jaws dropped when we watched a YouTube video in which a model dropped seven inches after putting on one of Rey's waist cinchers.

Roberto Cavalli's H&M partay

Bringing a taste of haute couture to the masses, the results of Roberto Cavalli's collab with H&M will hit stores tomorrow, with the emphasis on cocktail party decadence. Although it must be said that some of his ruffle-shirted looks would work just as well behind, as well as in front of, the bar.
Cavalli follows in the footsteps of other traditionally high fashion designers like Viktor & Rolf, Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney in creating his own collection for the Swedish apparel giant. The stand-out pieces, in our opinion, are the metallic lame pleated halter gown and the handful of sexy cocktail dresses in his trademark animal print chiffon.
The 30 women's styles (and around a dozen men's) are launching in more than 200 H&M stores country-wide. Which means there's a fair chance you might bump into your "Cavalli for H&M" doppelganger at a few holiday bashes this year.
Our advice? Accessorize to individualize.

Another Ashley Judd fragrance
In more olfactory news, we hear that the lovely Ashley Judd is launching another perfume. Called "Beloved", it will debut in March 2008, selling exclusively at Kohl's. Judd, the face of Estee Lauder's American Beauty brand, told journalists her happy news at a lunch held at the Cosmopolitan Club in Manhattan. "Beloved" adds to her previous fragrances, "Wonderful" and "Wonderful Indulgence" (methinks she doth protest too much?). She also has her name on a budget clothing line for the Goody's chain.
As well as smelling nice and selling affordable apparel, Judd is also a YouthAIDS Global Ambassador, raising awareness of the disease. Here she is, photographed in Washington DC at last night's premiere screening of "India's Hidden Plague". In it, Judd and three Bollywood stars explore the the brothels of Mumbai and the truck stops of Jaipur, tracing how HIV travels from high-risk groups to the general population. Warming Up With Style
We've all seen the photos of Pam Anderson and Kate Hudson frolicking around sunny Malibu wearing their short shorts and Uggs. But lets face it, the people who truly need these cozy fleece-lined footwear are those who live in places that have real winters. That's why it was perfectly fitting for Vogue to host the grand opening of
the UGG Australia store in Chicago last week. The Windy City soiree included skein stars like Jordana Spiro from "My Boys" to sports stars like Chris Duhon from the Chicago Bulls. The hot look this season is the Sandra boot, pictured at right. ($325/ www.uggaustralia.com) (M.McNiece)

A Walk in the Clouds
The amount of beautiful dresses floating around the grand opening of Monique Lhuillier's new boutique was almost dizzying. "I feel like I am on a cloud tonight," said Lhuillier. "It is a dream to build a store that is a great backdrop for our product." The shop was clearly embraced by Hollywood's stylish ladies who all arrived in a dress by the designer. Lhuillier was the queen of the ball chatting with the likes of Maggie Grace, Kristen Bell and Rebecca Gayheart. Besides beautiful bridal gowns, the store also featured a new line of china and handbags. "It is a lifestyle that we are building," says Lhuillier. "The categories will just grow." The Bee's Knees

In the world of competitive baby strolling, the race just got a little tighter. Bugaboo releases their newest innovation, the Bugaboo Bee, September 1. Part baby carriage, part SUV, their sunny yellow stroller fully envelops little ones with an oversized retractable cocoon-shaped dome that serves as a sunshade to reflect UVA and UVB rays. The Bee also comes equipped with an all weather rain cover, a 4-wheel independent suspension system, a 360 degree turning radius and is the company’s most compact model — one piece foldable. While the Stylephile isn’t quite sure what to do with an all weather, all terrain baby carriage, we are a fan of the cute shape, name and Bumblebee color. Although offered in red, khaki, blue and black, we recommend the namesake shade. ($529, Bugaboo.com)

Hate or love it, L.A.’s significance to the fashion world is undeniable. Clearly, Elie Tahari agrees, as he’s just opened a new boutique at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. The veteran designer explains, "There is a laid back sensibility in L.A. that translates to the way people dress. Celebrities drive a lot of trends, and L.A. is the center of celebrity life. In turn, it has become one of the most influential cities for fashion." Tahari’s sentiment is spot on, considering that Angelina Jolie just made headlines at Cannes, while sporting his designs. Bag "It"
During the weekend (and let’s be honest—most of the week), the average Angeleno throws on jeans, a buttery tee, flip-flops or ballet flats and a radiantly extravagant bag. Couture consciousness does pull us towards established European and New York fashion houses, but, on good days, hot local designers also attracts attention. Allison Burns’ new Deluxe collection (including the explosive fire engine red Atomic, pictured here) is making waves. But it’s her upcoming high-end unisex Captured collection for fall 07, that’s already caught on. Mary-Kate Olsen, who clearly has her pick of purses, is already flaunting the Medium Satchel with whip stitched zipper pockets around town. Now available for pre-order on the L.A. designer’s website, there is already a mile long waiting list. Better get on the bandwagon before you miss the boat—and before I use another transportation metaphor. Atomic: $490, Captured Medium Satchel: $950, allisonburns.com

The Wylde One
Designer Paula Thomas is a warm host with a statuesque laugh—the type of woman who hugs you hard and tells fantastic stories. Last week, the former model celebrated the release of the book "Death Valley" (an artistic look at her latest Thomas Wylde collection) with a lively dinner co-hosted by Flaunt magazine in the penthouse at the Chateau Marmont. Guests like Courteney Cox and David Arquette joined Vincent Gallo and Kelly Lynch at what appeared to be a more madcap than the usual fashion fete of ladies who lunch. At my table, model Michele Hicks and I discussed the merits of buying trendy looks at Forever 21. Still, Hicks—along with Minnie Driver and Marley Shelton—opted to wear black cocktail dresses (think wedding cakes in black) from Thomas Wylde. Each guest left with a sumptuous cashmere-silk blend blanket emblazoned with a skull. One guest even tried to make her own quilt, apparently. The producer Mark Canton told me that a woman had attempted to grab his gift blanket. Thankfully, they didn’t have to tussle, as she sacrificed her purloined surplus. Check out the bewitching Thomas Wylde collection at Maxfield in Los Angeles or go to her Web site to find other local shops that carry her line.

Best Man
When I got married last year, I made the grave error of downing three—okay, maybe five—glasses of Champagne on the night before my wedding. Guess who awoke with splotchy skin, dark circles, and a barn-size headache? Had it not been for the extraordinary L.A. hair stylist and make up artist Byron Williams, my husband might have had second thoughts on the altar. Byron, who just opened his new salon in Beverly Hills, spackled my face, concealed those carry-on bags beneath my eyes, and styled my hair in cascading ringlets that looked great throughout the ceremony and reception. Last week, Byron christened his chic new salon—called Byron Williams Studio—with a sexy party (co-hosted by Rachel Zoe) that drew well coiffed girls like Lindsay Lohan and Mischa Barton. Yes, there was lots of Champagne too.
