Possible Perfection at Pelican Hill
A shiny black limousine pulled up outside my home and the sunglasses-wearing driver tapped gently at the door. "May I take your bags?"Thus began our 24-hour pamper-fest at The Resort at Pelican Hill, the new five-star luxury resort that comes with its own world-class, 36-hole, Tom Fazio-designed golf course, not to mention uber-dramatic views above Newport Beach's Crystal Cove.
Half an hour out of L.A. and we started noticing shiny yachts and "McCain/Palin" signs, indicative of the neighborhood's wealthy, right-leaning resident population. We gasped as we pulled through a giant stone gateway marking the entrance to the resort. "Yes, it's amazing," said our driver, who seemed almost as excited as we were to arrive at the new property, a California-Tuscan hybrid of 5,000-plus square-foot custom homes.
Owned by the Irvine Co. (a real estate management company that also owns the nearby Island Hotel and Resort, formerly the Four Seasons Newport Beach), "The Possibility of Perfection" is Pelican Hill's motto and we did, indeed, receive the full star treatment.

Upon stepping out of the limo there were men in uniform, one to greet us, one to hand us steaming face towels, one to open doors, one to welcome us—all attending to our most trifling needs like the ultimate team of doting mothers.
It was a little overwhelming at first. For instance, when asked if we would need a ride to our villa, we accepted, not knowing where our villa was. We got in the car, and were driven approximately 50 feet across the road—a three-second car journey that underlined the near-obsessive level of service were were about to receive.
Inside the villa we met our personal butler, (he comes with the villas, and never sleeps, apparently) who offered to draw an evening bath for us. Earlier, we had been told by management that our butler could take care any of our needs whatsover. "That's good because I'll be needing a baby grand piano in our room tonight," I joked. The manager looked me in the eye and said, "If you want it, we will get it."
With its 204 bungalows and 128 villas, the resort has the feel of an exclusive gated community, and if that's your bag, you'll be in OC heaven. Our three-bedroom villa was an exercise in understated luxe living. Amid the muted beige and cream furnishings were plasma TVs (one in each bedroom, plus in the lounge area), lofty wood-beamed ceilings, and a limestone fireplace. The giant marble bathrooms featured deep tubs and separate rain showers, and the stainless steel kitchen was kitted out with the latest in Wolf appliances.
We lounged on the sun patio for several hours, marveling at the sparkling ocean view ahead of us. At sunset we donned swim gear and splashed in saline water infinity pool as the sky glowed crimson and peach along the PCH.
It was, truly, a perfect sunset.
We followed it with a fittingly decadent dinner at the Pelican Grill where a lively crowd of locals (always a good sign) was tucking in to the hearty cuisine (creamed spinach, champagne and filet mignon for me, please.)
In the morning, we took a yoga golf class on the course, rated in the nation's Top 100 by "Golf" magazine.
Yoga golf?
It's a fascinating concept, whereby a golf instructor observes your swing and a yoga instructor designs a class designed to work on your weaknesses. If I were actually a golfer, I'm sure it could have provided the missing link to better my game.
This resort is not for the intrepid. It is, rather, for those deserving souls who wish, for a weekend or even longer, to absolutely lose themselves in the womb-like comfort of Pelican Hill, a place where the azure skies never end, and where the possibility of perfection means you can finally stop thinking...and simply relax.
The Resort at Pelican Hill Resort debuts on November 26 with room rates starting at $695 a night.
See the resort for yourself here.

Sexy polish for sad nails
If you've ever found mushrooms growing on your toes after a dodgy pedicure, you might want to switch to 3LMD, a brand new line of nail polishes designed to reduce the risk of nail fungus and bacteria while safely covering up infected nails.Revolting but true—around 35 million Americans are thought to have some kind of nail infection at any given time. On top of that, many drugstore nail polishes contain toxic ingredients, including toluene and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which has been linked to multiple birth defects. Yikes.
With this in mind, dermatologist Dr. Lori Hobbs and her twin sister, p
ediatrician Dr. Lisa Hobbs-Richardson, developed the 3LMD line. "We envision that 3LMD Nail Lacquers will tap into a segment of the cosmetic and wellness community that has been, until now, virtually overlooked," says Hobbs.3LMD Nail Lacquers are $25 per bottle. Buy here.

Styles fit for a sommelier

Neck ties inspired by Sonoma Zin? Headbands that remind you of that Grands Cru Bordeaux-tasting you went to? Little Barrel is a new accessories line that caters to the true oenophile, providing high-quality essentials for any wine-lovers wardrobe.
The line, which officially launches November 7, was founded by a pair of grape fiends who came up with the idea after getting married in Santa Barbara's wine country in 2007. "We wanted to give our family and friends something to remind them of the vineyard experience," they said. When they couldn't find unique or fashionable enough gifts, they decided to make them themselves.
I think a Merlot tie would make a wonderful holiday gift for the family wino, don't you?
Ties are $75, headbands are $22, scarf belts are $65 and totes are $75–$95. Visit Little Barrel online and sign up for their newsletter, which will inform you when product goes on sale in a few weeks.

Un-sensible scent: Homage Attar by Amouage
During a recession, is it possible to justify spending $360 on a tiny bottle of perfume oil? When it's Homage Attar by Amouage, maybe. It takes an entire field of roses to create just one 12ml bottle which, with its potent blend of rose Taifi, silver Frankincense, Tayyiba (jasmine), sweet amber, white musk, silver oud and Al Andalus notes is rich and fecund, like a pregnant Donald Trump.
Created by Amouage for its 25th Anniversary, only a small drop needs to be applied to the pulse points, allowing the heavy, multi-faceted fragrance to develop over many hours.
As with buying $2,800 tubs of La Prairie Caviar Luxe face cream or Ginza Tanaka's $1.9 million platinum handbag, there can be a certain guilt involved in such indulgence. But for those who believe money was meant to be blown, you can buy your microscopic bottle of Homage Attar here.

Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOPy banana pancakes

Gwyneth Paltrow's new GOOP lifestyle newsletter gives mortals a taste of the actress's world—this week, she's all about wheat-free, vegan pancakes.Paltrow came up with the recipe for her buckwheat and banana pancakes when making breakfast for a friend who "doesn’t eat eggs or dairy and doesn’t love wheat" (I'm guessing Madonna). "I like the challenge of making super healthy food that doesn’t taste like it belongs in California in the 1970s," adds Paltrow. "If my son likes them, then anyone will like them!"
Also included in Paltrow's email blast are her recipes for Asian Tuna Sandwiches ("the soy-mayo spread really makes it sing", she says) and her twist on San Francisco's Slanted Door restaurant's recipe for Caramelized Black Pepper Chicken ("so easy it’s ridiculous").
Each week, GOOP subscribers can expect Paltrow's Martha Stewart-esque missives, broken down in to broad themes: "Make", "Go", "Get" and "Do".
Next week—Paltrow talks to three doctors about general health and detoxing.

Lindsay Lohan's 6126 Leggings

Named for the birth date of her idol Marilyn Monroe (born 6/1/1926), Lindsay Lohan's leggings line 1626 just debuted at Henri Bendel in New York. The public first got wind of Lohan's Marilyn fascination after she donned a slightly ratty peroxide wig for her revealing shoot for New York magazine. In it, she posed as the ill-fated screen idol, who was also rumored to be bisexual (I once heard something about Marilyn, Brigitte Bardot and a bathroom).
We're sure Marilyn herself would have loved these leggings; the Dom Basic ($128) is a plain back design with gold calf zipper, while the jungle-print Gable Basic ($80) features the ultimate anti-fashion statement—stirrups. Both looks are available for pre-order at Lisa Kline. Order here.
(More looks, including her Mr President leggings and leopard print ankle socks, will be available online at Intuition.com)

Win dinner at Shin in Hollywood
21st century Brat Packers DJ Steve Aoki, Gerard Butler ("Rocknrolla"), The Strokes' Julian Casablancas, Chris Masterson ("Malcolm in the Middle"), Danny Masterson ("That 70s Show"), Laura Prepon ("That 70s Show") and music producer Mark Ronson have formed a gastronomic dream-team of sorts, teaming up to open Shin, a glitzy Korean BBQ in Hollywood. (The brains behind their celebrity brawn is the well-connected chef/restaurateur Simon Shin.)Last night's launch party went on until the wee hours, with Butler (who stars in Guy Ritchie's latest effort, "Rocknrolla") jumping over the bar to mix Belvedere cocktails while Mark Ronson, Danny Masterson and Steve Aoki took turns DJing. (Aoki's no stranger to the restaurant biz—his late father, the mercurial Rocky Aoki, founded the Benihana restaurant chain.)
Although we can't promise Butler will be behind the bar or Aoki behind the decks every night, we can offer one Stylephile reader a dinner for two at the new venue. (We hear the short rib casserole is especially melt-in-the-mouth.)
To win, tell us about the most exotic dining experience you've ever had. Post your answers as a comment, and include your email address. Deadline is Monday October 20 at 5 p.m.
Shin is at 1600 N. Wilcox Ave., Hollywood. Open 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Meat, $15-$35; soups, $12-$25; rice, noodles, $15. Full bar. (323) 464-4100, www.shinbbq.com.

Comme des Garcons unleashing on H&M, Nov 13

Not every one will necessarily "get" Comme des Garçons' capsule collection for H&M—but as an exercise in polka-dotted, saggy-panted high design for the masses, it's a resounding success.
Of all the H&M collabs so far (Viktor & Rolf, Karl Lagerfeld, Roberto Cavalli), this one with Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons represents H&M's most serious flirtation with avant garde.
This collection, which launches in Tokyo November 9 with an American debut November 13, offers a tantalizingly affordable glimpse in to the mind of Kawakubo, a true fashion auteur known for her fondness for polka dots.
H&M invited journalists to view the collection at its Los Angeles showroom last week. The collection features one group of jackets and skirts that play with deconstruction, while another group features classic Comme des Garçons boiled wool and gabardine offerings. A three-dimensional wool skirt with tattered edges nodded to traditional Japanese peasant garb. Harem trousers, meant to be worn with tailored button-up and booties, will no doubt become a staple of artsy closets worldwide.
The men’s collection was especially impressive—suits and shirts have been cut on the bias, while other shirts feature the trademark Comme des Garçons’ patchwork technique.
Accessories included a unisex CDG fragrance, polka dot weekend bags, slip-on and lace-up canvas shoes and an updated version of Comme des Garçons’ celebrated wallets, designed especially for H&M.
Items from the collection will be priced from $150 up. I like that it's not too inexpensive—CDG should never be too closely associated with the culture of throwaway fashion. And I like to imagine recession-stricken teenagers having to actually save up a little pocket money to own a piece of this prized collection.
The collection launches in selected H&M stores in the U.S. November 13, 2008.

L.A. sample sale goes online at iShopFem.com

With consumers scrambling for any way to save a buck, society has entered what historians will remember as the Golden Age of the Online Sample Sale—just yesterday, another site launched, iShopFem.com, the e-version of the popular L.A. sample sale event. The site went live with sales on Voom by Joy Han and CC Skye accessories. The first 500 shoppers to register on iShopFem.com will receive a free three-month Premier membership.Founded by Irene Wong, known in L.A. for her FEM sample sale events, the new e-commerce site will feature brands at 50 to 75 percent off retail pricing. Wong, a graduate of Parsons and FIDM fashion schools, also promises to showcase wares by emerging designers on the site. She launched iShopFem.com because she felt other sample sale websites were overly exclusive. She wanted her site to be open to anyone, not just invited members. Now that's what I call democracy.

Actress launches ONE OCTOBER purse line

ONE OCTOBER, which Zal launched with her good friend Naomi Stokeld, is geared toward the environmentally-conscious consumer. "Salmon skin is only an industrial residue from the farmed salmon industry but it is considered "exotic" leather," they say. "By using salmon leather, we aim to deliver high fashion and quality, in an environmentally-sustainable way."
It was while living in Chile that Stokeld, a corporate lawyer, discovered the myriad possibilities of salmon leather. Upon moving back to Los Angeles, she met Roxana and the two decided to combine their talents to create ONE OCTOBER.
Don't like fish? Not all of the bags are made with salmon skin—their "Joanna" bag is made from patent leather with a salmon skin edge. The bags retail for around $400.

Medieval lipstick for modern-day enchantresses

Morgan le Fey, the powerful sorceress from the legend of King Arthur as portrayed by Helen Mirren in 1981's "Excalibur", had the ability to transfix men with just one pout of her provocative, preternaturally rosy lips. Lipstick Queen's new lip stain "Medieval" won't necessarily endow you with le Fey's magic powers—but you may find yourself kissing a few more princes, thanks to its sheer, moisturizing formula.
"Medieval" was created by beauty expert Poppy King, who realized that many women don't like heavy, matte lip colors, and prefer a lighter, more subtle effect.
"Medieval" is $20 at Barney's New York. Buy here.

La Prairie's $1,000 moisturizer
Swiss beauty company La Prairie's newest moisturizer Cellular Cream Platinum Rare is so high-end, they're not even advertising it. At all. Instead, they're distributing the $1,000-a-tub platinum-infused age-fighting cream among stars, stylists, beauty editors and makeup artists, and letting word of its magical powers spread. It's a new promotional tactic for La Prairie, which, until now, had not reached out to the entertainment community in such a targeted way. "At $1,000, this product is not for everybody," the company's publicist explained. "It's really for people for whom skin care is a major priority, like actors, presenters and so on."The cream officially debuted here in Los Angeles over Emmy weekend, at the über-exclusive Platinum Guild International Gifting Suite in Beverly Hills. Platinum's healing and restorative properties are well-known, but the metal has not been incorporated in to a beauty product until now. The cream is climate sensitive, and adjusts to heat (useful if you spend your days slowly baking under studio lighting) and humidity (helpful if you're starring in "Pirates of the Caribbean").
Cellular Cream Platinum Rare (50ml / NET WT. 1.7 OZ.) retails for $1,000 US and is available at laprairie.com, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Holt Renfrew in Canada.

Vivienne Westwood's first album
Vivienne Westwood, how come it took you so long to put out your own album? Maybe you were too busy dressing the Sex Pistols in the eighties. Maybe you got distracted, putting supermodels in impossibly high heels in the 90s. We're just happy that now, at age 67, you're finally bringing us Catwalk Breakdown. Sadly, the album doesn't feature any original music by Westwood, and is instead a demented mish-mash of orchestral classics and noisy oddities. In keeping with the designer's eclectic tastes, songs range from Billy Fury to Tchaikovsky. Here's the track listing:
Permafrost, Magazine
Concierto De Aranjuez: 1. Allegro Con Spirito, Alexandre Lagoya
Barock, Luca Mainardi
Cave Girl, Dirty Stop Outs
L'ecole Des Aegypans (From Cydalise Et Le Chevre-Pied), Orchestre National Opera De Paris
La Lecon De Flute De Pan (From Cydalise Et Le Chevre-Pied), Orchestre National Opera De Paris
Dance Of The Nights, Vladimir Ashkenazy
Last Night Was Made For Love, Billy Fury
Valse Lente, Paul Strauss
Pas de deux: Variation 2 (Dance Of The Sugar-Plum Fairy), Kirov Orchestra
Pas De Deux: Coda, Kirov Orchestra
Georgia Pines, Link Wray
Waltz Of The Flowers, Kirov Orchestra
Personality Crisis, The New York Dolls
Great Balls Of Fire, Mae West
Slow Down, Larry Williams
Her ex, Malcolm McClaren (is he still fixated on eight-bit music?) should watch his back.
Catwalk Breakdown is released September 15, you can pre-order it for $49.95 here.

Obama's Daytime army
So this is how soap stars do politics—by stripping down to their Obama brand underwear.Pictured left to right are Ashley Jones ("The Bold and the Beautiful"), Kristen Renton ("Days of Our Lives"), Andrew Christian (Obama ’08 Briefs designer), Christel Khalil ("The Young & the Restless"), Blake Berris ("Days of Our Lives") and Lesli Kay ("The Bold and the Beautiful").
They're showing Barack Obama the depth of their support by posing in these apparently best-selling “Obama ’08 Briefs” ($29 each), designed by underwear guru Andrew Christian.
Christian, whose undies are sold at Kitson Men (Los Angeles), Fred Segal (Los Angeles), and Patricia Field (New York), created something called "Flashback Butt Lifting Technology", which, he says, allows the wearer to "create the illusion of having that much sought after “bubble butt” without having to waste hours in the gym. The construction of the underwear automatically lifts the buttocks making them look more firm and round."
Obama, who probably doesn't have much gym time these days, will no doubt want to know more.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Andrew Christian's Obama briefs will be contributed to the Obama campaign. Buy here.

Matthew McConaughey's lady launches MUXO, boho-chic handbag line

Brazilian model Camilla Alves (Matthew McConaughey's main squeeze) and her mother are launching their new luxury handbag collection MUXO this week. The boho-chic line is described as "elegance meets tribal exotic", and features leather travel bags, handbags and clutches with one-of-a-kind leather finishes. Each and every bag in the collection has been handcrafted by Alves and her mom. The designs were influenced by the two places Alves spends most of her time in: Brazil and New York. "They are as ready for the beach as they are 5th Avenue," she says. "Because I travel a lot, I found that there weren’t any handbags available that were strong and sexy enough at the same time, and if they were, everybody else had one just like it," explains Alves. "Everything was either too small—really cute but impractical—or too big—way too practical but not fashionable."
Charlize Theron, Lance Armstrong, Penelope Cruz, Guy Oseary, Drew Barrymore, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, and pretty much everyone else in Hollywood are expected to attend the line's launch party tonight.
We're just amazed she's managing all this barely a month after giving birth to her and McConaughey's son. Bravo!

APOTHIA handsoaps evoke salty ozone and chili peppers
It's the simple touches—like fresh hand towels, vintage copies of The Face magazine, and most importantly, decadent hand soaps—that can turn a mundane trip to the bathroom into a lifestyle experience. With this in mind, APOTHIA has launched a new collection of Hand & Body Washes, available in eight “experiential” scents.
The "Casa" wash smells like Casablanca lilies, fresh-cut grass and fresh air, while "Verde" carries the scent of bright cilantro, earthy tomato leaf, a zesty squeeze of lime, and a hint of chili peppers. The "Soul" wash is based on African ginger, taboti wood, rich mahogany, and grains of paradise, while "Wave" is comprised of white grapefruit, mandarin, yuzu, driftwood, seagrass, and salty ozone aromas.

I may never leave the bathroom...

Elegantly Brut-ish: Piper-Heidsieck "Piscine"
There's nothing more refreshing than champagne on ice—but champagne with ice?Piper-Heidsieck Piscine, a cocktail made of brut bubbly served on champagne ice-cubes, was once served to Mediterranean jet-setters during the Cannes Film Festival. It was re-launched last week at Whiskey Blue in Los Angeles, and will be available as a featured cocktail at eight more of nightlife maven Rande Gerber's lounges around the world. Purists may turn their nose up at the notion of adding ice cubes to a champagne, but in a Piscine, the ice-cubes are made of frozen Cuvée Brut, so your bubbles won't be diluted.
We hear that Piscine has already made a splash across the pond—expect a tidal wave to hit your shores soon.

Kryolan makeup for HD lenses

Kryolan, the oldest independent professional make-up company in the world, has launched a High Definition Makeup line that can stand up to even the most unforgiving of hi-res lenses.
By 2009, all television broadcasters will have to switch to High Definition, and with HD camcorders already available on the consumer market, it's only a matter of time before you'll be recording all your special moments on an HD camera.
Which is bad news for those of us with less-than-flawless skin, as HD tends to pick up and magnify even the slightest wrinkle, pockmark, and shadow.
With this in mind, Kryolan has created its High Definition Makeup line tailored specifically for high-resolution cameras. "Our HD make-up ensures that every camera light and angle is a good one," says Claudia Longo of Kryolan.
Products include a Micro Foundation Matifying Liquid ($39.95), Micro Foundation Smoothing Liquid ($43.95), and Micro Foundation ($32.95), Micro Silk Powder ($27), available in 18 colors.
You might even want to use it prior to sexy web-cam conversations with your long-distance lover.

Tarina Tarantino Barbie doll launch

It's every little girl's dream to have a Barbie doll that looks just like them. Jewelry designer Tarina Tarantino saw her dream come true last week, with the launch of Mattel's Tarina Tarantino Collector Series Barbie Doll, a princessy dolly in her very own, pink-haired likeness.Fellow fuschia-haired diva Audrey Kitching (online scene queen with armies of teenage followers and former girlfriend of Panic! At the Disco's Brendon Urie) was at the launch party, held at Tarina's store in West Hollywood. Kitching is pictured above, with her Ken, fellow "scene king", author Clint Catalyst. WWE star Maryce was there, styled by fashion designer Jared Gold, and looking just like a chic blonde 1950s Barbie. (Maryce is pictured with Tarina Tarantino)

The Great Los Angeles Brainwash
There was a rumor going around the Mr Brainwash private preview in Hollywood last night that the whole thing was, in fact, a hoax."Someone told me this is all a big joke," said my informant in hushed tones. "We're all being filmed, and then in a week they'll reveal that Mr Brainwash isn't who he says he is, and everyone will know just how stupid L.A. is for falling for it."
This was whispered to me as I hovered around a graffiti'd urinal, à la Duchamp, just one of many jarringly literal interpretations on display in the former CBS studio on Sunset Blvd.
Whatever the truth, Mr Brainwash is definitely real, at least: he's Thierry Guetta, a French filmmaker who became so obsessed with the street artists he was filming, he decided to become one himself, wheat-pasting stretches of L.A.'s La Brea corridor with black and white Banksy-style stencils.
And if Guetta is indeed out to
But that's not to say there weren't any original ideas inside this cavern of re-purposed greatness.
His larger installations were, for example, very striking--former editing bays filled with books and taped off, graffiti'd with the words "not finish"; a dog sculpture made from old telephones; a 15 feet high take-out bag, complete with receipt taped to the side; and a 30 foot high robot built entirely from (working) vintage TVs. "Look, that's totally L.A.," said a friend, pointing to a cage filled with film reels and car tires. She was right.
I asked Roger Gastman, publisher of street art magazine "Swindle", whether he thought the Mr Brainwash thing was an elaborate J.T. Leroy-esque hoax. "Um, no, I don't think so," he shrugged. "I mean, he exists. He's outside right now, riding a tricycle with a cast on his leg."
The next morning I asked Shepard Fairey, arguably the best-known graffiti artist in America, his thoughts on the conspiracy theory. "He's not a hoaxer," said Fairey. "He is, however, crazy."
Go see for yourselves.
Mr Brainwash, "Life Is Beautiful" continues through Sunday, June 22. At 6121 W Sunset Blvd @ El Centro, Hollywood, CA, 90028. Click here for opening hours.

Are you a Marchesa bride?
Are you a bare-foot bride, who'll make her vows in a bikini on Bali? Are you a vintage bride, who'll rock her great grandmother's 1920s lace nightdress as she walks down the aisle?
Or maybe your style is a little more glam, a touch more red carpet—in which case you might be a Marchesa bride.
As reported by WWD.com, Georgina Chapman, red carpet dressmaker and recent bride of Harvey Weinstein, is launching a seven-piece bridal collection, with looks in various shades of white, all available off-the-rack.
Chapman, who designed her own wedding dress, looks likely to stick to her trademark Goddess-inspired, draped looks for the capsule collection.
Brides will be able to order from Bergdorf Goodman later this month, and actual stock will arrive in July, with dresses to be priced between $3,500 and $10,000.

Last night at Little Dom's
Living in L.A., you become accustomed to regular celebrity interaction. My friend once asked Vincent Gallo to serve her a hotdog outside Home Depot (she didn't realize who he was, "he was standing by the hotdog stand, he had a beard" she protested). A nameless star of the 1980s once invited me to take magic mushrooms and have a threesome with his wife. (I didn't go there). And a few years ago, I spent my birthday with Def Leppard. All run of the mill, regular La-La land kind of stuff. But last night at Little Dom's restaurant, even jaded Angelenos like myself couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at the random Monday night star-power strolling through the door. Little Dom's recently opened in the Los Feliz neighborhood of L.A., the Eastside outpost of Dominick's restaurant in West Hollywood. It's a cozy little spot, serving upscale Italian fare. Not the kind of place that screams red carpet. So I was only mildly surprised to spot Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, waiting to be seated with some friends. Then in sashayed Kelly Lynch, blonde and eternally beautiful, with her equally long-haired beau Mitch Glazer. "Hmm," I thought. "It's getting hot in here." Then not five minutes later, in walks Christina Ricci. "This is getting ridiculous," I whispered to my friend. "I know," she said nodding over to the corner, where Orlando Bloom was hanging out.
With that much eye-candy, the great food was just a bonus. Long live L.A.

Jimmy Zoo
I arrived at the Jimmy Choo store opening on Rodeo Drive on Friday night only to be greeted by the sight of hundreds of paparazzi and, even worse, a line to get in. The PR woman in charge calmly informed me that fire marshalls were about to close the party down, so they simply couldn't let anybody else in. I pressed my nose up against the window of the store, and tried to soak up the atmosphere. I saw Tamara Mellon (pictured, right, with Rachel Zoe) the British socialite who founded the Jimmy Choo empire. I spotted Lisa Rinna, Debra Messing, Lisa
Kudrow, and an assortment of Choo-heeled Beverly Hills ladies. There was my friend, style writer and consummate fashionista Linlee Allen, sipping from a glass of Veuve. Fashion editor Merle Ginsberg was interviewing the party goers. AndrewAndrew, the creative design duo were there, wearing identical outfits and looking Awesome in Argyle. And there was the beautiful actress Shiva Rose. Sigh. And then Harvey Weinstein showed up.
The movie mogul is financial backer of the newly re-launched Halston label, with Jimmy Choo's Tamara Mellon helming, Versace's former head of couture Marco Zanini designing and stylist Rachel Zoe on board. Weinstein's new wife (they married last month), the very pretty Georgina Chapman, is herself a fashion designer (for Marchesa).
As Harvey Weinstein strolled forth, the seas parted and as you'd expect, he achieved a clean entrance into the party. He may be a large-ish fella (and therefore most definitely a fire hazard), but in Beverly Hills, there's always enough room for Harvey.
(PS: The Stylephile was allowed in a few minutes later. Grrr.)

New Yorkers, you have until January 28 to check out Helmut Lang's art installation at the "the journal", a gallery in Williamsburg opened by "the journal" magazine.Lang retired from fashion two years ago after his falling out with the Prada Group and no longer has anything to do with the Helmut Lang label.. Since then he has been working on various art-related projects, including his website hl art. Check out his views on the relationship between art and fashion in "the journal".
The installation, called Next Ever After, features a large cracked mirrored ball, which "like Janus, the Roman god, is able to view the past and future simultaneously, reflecting while simultaneously absorbing its surroundings, creating a sensation both voyeuristic and self-aware,” as explained on the press release.

It's alive! The Ann Demeulemeester shop in Seoul
Another reason to love the vertical gardening movement--the new Ann Demeulemeester shop in the Gangham district of Seoul, whose facade is entirely covered in living, breathing green matter. Even one of the indoor stairways is entirely lined with moss. The building is so spectacular, we wonder whether it overshadows the clothes that are on sale inside. The space, a "synthetic organism", took four months to design , and another six to constrcut. Seoul architecture firm Mass Studies headed up the project, led by Minsuk Cho (whose ‘Heyri Dalki Theme Park’ was exhibited at the 2004 Venice Biennale).
Not sure what kind of upkeep the living garden will require, but let's pray for plenty of rain in 2008.

Seen at the Matthew Barney opening

I met Alia Raza, pictured here with her friend Alex, at the Matthew Barney opening at Regen Projects in L.A. I complimented her on her dress which she informed me was made by her friend Magda Berliner, who just happens to be one of L.A.'s most talented fashion designers (find out where to buy her stuff here). Turns out Berliner is providing costumes for a short film that Raza will start shooting in January. It is based on a short story of Miranda July's, and stars Becky Stark of Lavender Diamond, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, fashionista Liz Goldwyn, and OK Go's Damian Kulash.
Fashion designer Jasmin Shokrian, Melissa Coker of Wren and Juan Carlos Obando are also donating and making clothes for the short. all are working under the direction of costume designer Lauren Tafuri. Meeting Raza was one of the highlights of the opening, which was attended by Barney's lady, Björk. A video of Barney's recent performance art piece—you know, the one where the girls pee and the bull tries to mate with a truck—was screened in a back room.

Green beauty emporium opens
When make-up artist Reneta Helfman decided to rid her lifestyle of all chemicals, she set out on a mission to find luxury all-natural beauty products. On her quest, she discovered tons of great lines like Red Flower, Caldera, Stella McCartney and Erbaviva. The problem was in order to collect all these goodies, Helfman had to spend hours traveling around to different stores like Barneys, Sephora and Fred Segal.
One day, while sitting in her car, a light bulb went off. "I thought in this day and age when everything is going green, how could there not be a store for all of these products?" Six months later, Vert was born. A chic beauty boutique on Abbott Kinney in Venice is a breath of fresh air, offering a wide selection of luxury eco-friendly products. Helman says cutting chemicals out of her lifestyle has brought with it many benefits."I feel like a different person. My hair has grown long, my skin is better and my energy levels greatly increased," she said. Celebrities are already taking notice of the new shop and Thursday's opening night soiree drew flawless faces like Molly Sims and Ginnifer Goodwin.

Gary Baseman's vinyl dolly

I just received an email from the artist Gary Baseman telling me that his White HotChaChaCha, an albino three-legged wily imp, has been made into a limited edition vinyl toy. It went on sale today, exclusively on his website. The limited edition pieces (only 300 were made) just went on sale for $110, so if you're interested in getting one you should visit the website now, before they are all gone. Vinyl toy collecting is a big thing these days, apparently...
I have known Gary for a couple of years, and have always enjoyed his talent and his mischievous personality. Did you know that Gary won an Emmy in 2000 for his animated ABC/Disney show, Teacher's Pet?
Here's a photo of him and the lovely young artist Natalia Fabia, who recently had a packed opening at the Corey Helford gallery in Culver City. Among the paintings was a portrait of yours truly, dressed as like a flamenco dancer dragging a suitcase across the African plains.

Judith Thurman's LA dish
My good friend, style writer Steffie Nelson invited me to a conversation with longtime "New Yorker" writer Judith Thurman (pictured) last week...and what a treat it was. Held at the Los Angeles Central Library in Downtown, the conversation was led by KUSC radio host Gail Eichenthal, who probed Thurman on the stories contained in her latest book, "Cleopatra's Nose, 39 Varieties of Desire". Thurman, known for her fashion essays, has profiled many of the world's leading designers and artists, and the book contains her thoughts on Coco Chanel, Rei Kawakubo, Diane Arbus and Elsa Schiaparelli. In one of her stories, about Giorgio Armani, she opens with a personal anecdote, recalling arriving at what she thought was a costume party in a green caterpillar outfit, only to realize everyone else was wearing tuxes and cocktail dresses. "Where was Giorgio Armani when I needed him," she wrote (or something to that effect), in her humorous and artfully-crafted prose.
Thurman told the audience about spending an evening chatting with Jackie Onassis in the sixties, describing her as "the ultimate courtesan". Later, while signing copies of the book, Thurman told Steffie and I that she was knee-deep in a profile of designer Isabelle Toledo (pictured here with her husband Ruben), who was controversially dropped from her head role at Anne Klein just a few weeks ago. We can't wait to read it! Afterward, we popped next door to Cafe Pinot, and spotted Judith again. She sat at a table with friends, including the young model and pizza heiress Caroline D'Amore, whom we mentioned in a post just a few weeks ago.
Small world.

A feast for the senses
Imagine a store that sold home furnishings by Cappellini, flatscreen TVs by Bang & Olufsen and that housed its own art gallery, Virtu. All that's missing is a bowl of Cheetos and a remote, right?
Minus the Cheetos, that vision is now reality, with the opening of a new 6,000 square-foot concept store and showroom on Beverly Blvd in Los Angeles.
Cappellini, the iconic Italian design firm, works with designers and artists from around the world. The showroom features historical pieces such as the Revolving Cabinet by Shiro Kuramata, and the Proust chair by Alessandro Mendini.
The 1,200 square-foot Bang & Olufsen space features a "media room" where you can chill out with the Danish firm's high-end audio-visual gadgets.
And the gallery space, named Virtu, will feature rotating themed art shows, starting with an exhibition of Raphael Mazzucco's huge resin photographs.

We have yet to sniff it ourselves, but we did find this review that said it smells "hazardous, in as much as the quality of the ingredients used has been cheapened down and the composition seems intent on drilling a hole in your brain if you persist in smelling it from too up close."
Yikes.

Roberto Cavalli's H&M partay

Bringing a taste of haute couture to the masses, the results of Roberto Cavalli's collab with H&M will hit stores tomorrow, with the emphasis on cocktail party decadence. Although it must be said that some of his ruffle-shirted looks would work just as well behind, as well as in front of, the bar.
Cavalli follows in the footsteps of other traditionally high fashion designers like Viktor & Rolf, Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney in creating his own collection for the Swedish apparel giant. The stand-out pieces, in our opinion, are the metallic lame pleated halter gown and the handful of sexy cocktail dresses in his trademark animal print chiffon.
The 30 women's styles (and around a dozen men's) are launching in more than 200 H&M stores country-wide. Which means there's a fair chance you might bump into your "Cavalli for H&M" doppelganger at a few holiday bashes this year.
Our advice? Accessorize to individualize.

In more olfactory news, we hear that the lovely Ashley Judd is launching another perfume. Called "Beloved", it will debut in March 2008, selling exclusively at Kohl's. Judd, the face of Estee Lauder's American Beauty brand, told journalists her happy news at a lunch held at the Cosmopolitan Club in Manhattan. "Beloved" adds to her previous fragrances, "Wonderful" and "Wonderful Indulgence" (methinks she doth protest too much?). She also has her name on a budget clothing line for the Goody's chain.
As well as smelling nice and selling affordable apparel, Judd is also a YouthAIDS Global Ambassador, raising awareness of the disease. Here she is, photographed in Washington DC at last night's premiere screening of "India's Hidden Plague". In it, Judd and three Bollywood stars explore the the brothels of Mumbai and the truck stops of Jaipur, tracing how HIV travels from high-risk groups to the general population. A Parade of Lingerie
Lingerie was on display at the Frederick's of Hollywood spring fashion show Wednesday night. Sitting front row at Hollywood's Palladium was Jessica Simpson, Amanda Bynes, Kristen Bell and Vanessa Hudgens who oohed and ahhed over the sexy looks. Jane Kaczmarck was also on hand since the evening benefited her org Clothes Off Our Back. After the show, a vintage lingerie clad Dita Von Teese performed in, what else, a gilded bird cage followed by a set by the Foo Fighters, which got everyone dancing.

That's why it was perfectly fitting for Vogue to host the grand opening of

The amount of beautiful dresses floating around the grand opening of Monique Lhuillier's new boutique was almost dizzying. "I feel like I am on a cloud tonight," said Lhuillier. "It is a dream to build a store that is a great backdrop for our product." The shop was clearly embraced by Hollywood's stylish ladies who all arrived in a dress by the designer. Lhuillier was the queen of the ball chatting with the likes of Maggie Grace, Kristen Bell and Rebecca Gayheart. Besides beautiful bridal gowns, the store also featured a new line of china and handbags. "It is a lifestyle that we are building," says Lhuillier. "The categories will just grow." The Bee's Knees

In the world of competitive baby strolling, the race just got a little tighter. Bugaboo releases their newest innovation, the Bugaboo Bee, September 1. Part baby carriage, part SUV, their sunny yellow stroller fully envelops little ones with an oversized retractable cocoon-shaped dome that serves as a sunshade to reflect UVA and UVB rays. The Bee also comes equipped with an all weather rain cover, a 4-wheel independent suspension system, a 360 degree turning radius and is the company’s most compact model — one piece foldable. While the Stylephile isn’t quite sure what to do with an all weather, all terrain baby carriage, we are a fan of the cute shape, name and Bumblebee color. Although offered in red, khaki, blue and black, we recommend the namesake shade. ($529, Bugaboo.com)

In turn, it has become one of the most influential cities for fashion." Tahari’s sentiment is spot on, considering that Angelina Jolie just made headlines at Cannes, while sporting his designs. Bag "It"
During the weekend (and let’s be honest—most of the week), the average Angeleno throws on jeans, a buttery tee, flip-flops or ballet flats and a radiantly extravagant bag. Couture consciousness does pull us towards established European and New York fashion houses, but, on good days, hot local designers also attracts attention. Allison Burns’ new Deluxe collection (including the explosive fire engine red Atomic, pictured here) is making waves. But it’s her upcoming high-end unisex Captured collection for fall 07, that’s already caught on. Mary-Kate Olsen, who clearly has her pick of purses, is already flaunting the Medium Satchel with whip stitched zipper pockets around town. Now available for pre-order on the L.A. designer’s website, there is already a mile long waiting list. The Wylde One
Designer Paula Thomas is a warm host with a statuesque laugh—the type of woman who hugs you hard and tells fantastic stories. Last week, the former model celebrated the release of the book "Death Valley" (an artistic look at her latest Thomas Wylde collection) with a lively dinner co-hosted by Flaunt magazine in the penthouse at the Chateau Marmont. Guests like Courteney Cox and David Arquette joined Vincent Gallo and Kelly Lynch at what appeared to be a more madcap than the usual fashion fete of ladies who lunch. At my table, model Michele Hicks and I discussed the merits of buying trendy looks at Forever 21. Still, Hicks—along with Minnie Driver and Marley Shelton—opted to wear black cocktail dresses (think wedding cakes in black) from Thomas Wylde. Each guest left with a sumptuous cashmere-silk blend blanket emblazoned with a skull. One guest even tried to make her own quilt, apparently. The producer Mark Canton told me that a woman had attempted to grab his gift blanket. Thankfully, they didn’t have to tussle, as she sacrificed her purloined surplus. Check out the bewitching Thomas Wylde collection at Maxfield in Los Angeles or go to her Web site to find other local shops that carry her line.

Best Man
When I got married last year, I made the grave error of downing three—okay, maybe five—glasses of Champagne on the night before my wedding. Guess who awoke with splotchy skin, dark circles, and a barn-size headache? Had it not been for the extraordinary L.A. hair stylist and make up artist Byron Williams, my husband might have had second thoughts on the altar. Byron, who just opened his new salon in Beverly Hills, spackled my face, concealed those carry-on bags beneath my eyes, and styled my hair in cascading ringlets that looked great throughout the ceremony and reception. Last week, Byron christened his chic new salon—called Byron Williams Studio—with a sexy party (co-hosted by Rachel Zoe) that drew well coiffed girls like Lindsay Lohan and Mischa Barton. Yes, there was lots of Champagne too. Girl Power
For all the hoopla about Spider-Man 3, it’s not like a little dude in a stretchy suit (be it black or red and blue) is that crazy. Supergirl, on the other hand, is brand new. With the help of designers like D’Annunzio, FEW, Junk Food Clothing, Havianas, Croes, Bejeweled, Goorin bros. and White Trash Charms, Warner Bros. is launching an S-shield "Supergirl" collection, including bags, jewelry, dresses, tees/hoodies and even ballet flats. At Intuition on Thursday night, a launch event will benefit Girl’s Inc. of Greater Los Angeles, a non-profit dedicated to inspiring girls to be "Strong, Smart and Bold." Hollywood women from Taryn Manning to Molly Sims plan to be on hand to welcome the new line, which will be available to the public this week exclusively at Intuition, in store and online. $23-$1,000, Intuition, 10581 W. Pico Blvd., (310) 234-8442, shopintuition.com

A Perfekt Storm
When it comes to perfecting our looks, faces get a lot of, well, face time. We get facials, use countless serums and creams and then cover up any imperfections with makeup. That’s all well and good until bathing suit season arrives, leaving our skin exposed all over the place. We can’t very well spread standard foundation from neck to toe. Per-fékt Beauty founder Richard Anderson—who launched huge cosmetic lines like YSL and Bobbie Brown Essentials—developed his brand new Body Perfection Gel with that dilemma in mind. Created in the image of his lauded Skin Perfection product, the body version conditions and moisturizes skin, fights aging and tones with Hyaloronic Filling Spheres, primes for smoothness, and adds a bit of subtle golden color and glimmer to even out tone and give a sun-kissed impression. Shades include Brilliant, Golden and Exotic, but can be mixed and matched according to your summer color. Although the product doesn’t launch in stores like Sephora until June 1, it will be available starting this week on the website. How Per-fékt is that? $48, perfektbeauty.com

Getting The Boots
Although the British Invasion was generally considered a good thing, I’m on the fence about certain other British exports, like Marmite and the Beckhams. England won’t take Snoop, but we’re supposed to absorb Posh Spice? Fortunately, beloved British pharmacy and Beauty line, Boots, has also just arrived in the U.S. On Tuesday evening, a Sunset Tower Hotel blue carpet bash in the Terrace Room announced the arrival of the Boots collection at Target. Under American and British flags, Paris Hilton, Sophia Bush, Ali Larter, Christina Milian and Emmy Rossum tippled Bass Ale (black and tan, anyone?) to Johnny Walker Black. The starlets also sampled products from all different Boots lines. Boots’ Target collection includes everything from Mediterranean Body Butter to No7 Super Slim Anti-Cellulite Balm and Restore & Renew Beauty Serum. Give us back Madonna (minus the accent), and maybe we've got a fair trade. $7.99-$17.99, Target
